CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina men's tennis took the doubles point and won four of the six singles bouts on Tuesday afternoon to defeat the South Carolina State University Bulldogs 5-2 in non-conference action at the Lynn Stevens Tennis Complex.
 
Prior to the start of the match, the Chanticleers recognized seniors Gonzalo Achondo, Pyry Hyrkkonen, Daiki Tanabe, Francesco Cori, and Juan Castellanos as part of the Senior Day festivities.
 
The No. 65 nationally-ranked doubles team of Diego Giraldo and Hyrkkonen cruised to a 6-2 win at the No. 1 doubles spot over Marcelo Rodgriguez and Elyes Marouani to start the match.
 
The team of Bastien Huon and Tanabe followed with a 6-1 victory at the No. 2 doubles position over Aleska Daskalovic and Erwan Momo of SCSU to give the Chants the doubles point.
 
SCSU evened the match score up at 1-1 with a straight-set win on court No. 3 to start singles play before the home team picked up back-to-back straight-set wins from Huon (6-2, 6-3) and Neil O'Connor (7-6, 6-3) at No. 1 and 6, respectively, to put CCU back in front at 3-1.
 
Seniors Hyrkkonen (6-3, 5-7, 6-4) and Tanabe (6-3, 4-6, 6-4) followed with back-to-back tough three-set wins on courts No. 4 and 5 to seal the win for the Chants.
 
The Bulldogs ended the day with a three-set (7-5, 5-7, 7-6) win in what was the best match of the day at the No. 2 singles position to put the final score at 5-2.
 
CCU (7-5) will hit the road for a non-conference match at Presbyterian College on Friday, April 9, before jumping back into Sun Belt Conference play with Troy at home on Sunday, April 11.
