CARY, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's golf team shot a team score of 286, 2-under par, over the first round of play and was through 17 holes of the second round before play was suspended due to lightning in the area on day one of the Stitch Intercollegiate in Cary, N.C.
The first day of play saw two lightning delays which hampered the 12-team field in completing the full 36-holes of play.
With Coastal's first-round of 286, 2-under par, the Chanticleers are in seventh overall.
Host and No. 9 NC State leads the tournament after 18-holes of play with a team score of 268, 20-under par. No. 26 Notre Dame (275, -13) and Virginia Tech (275, -13) are tied for second, while ETSU (278, -10) and Campbell (282, -6) round out the top five.
Fifth-year senior
States Fort led the Chants with a first-round 69, 3-under par, to place in a tie for 11th after the first 18 holes of play. The Georgia native carded seven birdies over his first 18 holes of play, and shot a 32, 4-under par, on the back nine.
Fellow veteran Chant
Zack Taylor turned in a first-round 70, 2-under par, in the morning round on Friday to head into round two in a tie for 16th overall. The senior leader shot four birdies and turned in a 33, 3-under par, on the front nine over his first 18 holes.
Sophomore
Garrett Cooper, the reigning Sun Belt Men's Golfer of the Week, overcame a double bogey on hole No. 3 to card three birdies and shoot 1-under par over the next 15 holes of the opening round to shoot a 73, +1, and place in a tie for 41st.
Chants
Seth Taylor and
Tyler Gray posted rounds of 74, +2, over the first round of play to sit in a tie for 45th overall, respectively.
Seth Taylor had two birdies and 12 pars in round one while Gray recorded an eagle and four birdies over the first 18 holes of the three-round event.
While not official, the Chants had completed 17 holes over the second round of play when the day was suspended.
Seth Taylor is 2-under for round two, while
Zack Taylor is even par. Fort is +1, Gray is +2, and Fort is +4 through the 17 holes.
Round two will resume on Saturday morning with the third and final round to follow.
