JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - On Wednesday, at the 2021 NCAA Track and Field East Preliminaries in Jacksonville, Fla., Sun Belt First-Team David Ejumeta became the second Chanticleer in school history to advance to the NCAA Track and Field Championships in the long jump competition.
In the final flight of the long jump, Ejumeta needed all three of his jumps to earn the 12th and final spot in the event to advance to next month's NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. On his last attempt, the Berin City, Nigeria, native jumped to 7.52 meters (-0.8), besting R'LazonBrumfield (7.52 meters (0.8)) of Tennessee State and Jeremiah Willis (7.52 meters (1.0)) of Louisville, who both jumped the same distance.
Braydon Bennett stayed alive on Wednesday evening and advanced to Friday night's quarterfinals in the 110-meter hurdles as he ran a personal best 13.77 (2.2), finishing fourth in heat four. Bennett's time was 16th out of the 24 qualifiers.
The two-sport athlete will go into Friday's race looking to qualify for Eugene as one of the top 12 time qualifiers.
On Thursday, day two of the NCAA East Preliminaries, the Chanticleer women will be on display as Melissa Jefferson, Jermaisha Arnold, and Shani'a Bellamy will compete in their respective individual events that include, the 100, 200, and 400 meters along with the 400 meter-hurdles. CCU's day will start at 7:25 p.m. ET.
