CONWAY, S.C. –Former Coastal Carolina baseball standout
Taylor Motter has been called up to the Colorado Rockies of the MLB, the organization announced on Tuesday. The Colorado Rockies selected the contract of Motter from the Albuquerque Isotopes (Triple-A).
Â
Drafted in the 17th round overall by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2011 MLB Draft, Motter returns to the major league level for the first time since the 2018 season.
Â
With the Isotopes this season, Motter was hitting .335 with 24 home runs, a triple, 16 doubles, 57 RBIs, 54 runs scored, and walked 49 times compared to just 49 strikeouts. He also had a .759 slugging percentage and a .460 on-base percentage in 67 games.
Â
After making his MLB debut on May 16, 2016, with the Rays versus the Toronto Blue Jays, Motter played 92 games for the Seattle Mariners in 2017 before splitting time in 2018 between Seattle and the Minnesota Twins, as well as playing in Triple-A.
Â
In 2019, he played in Double-A for the Midland RockHounds of the Oakland A's organization as well as with the New Britain Bees and the Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball before signing with the Kiwoom Heroes of the KBO League (South Korea).
Â
Over his MLB career, Motter has hit .191 with 10 home runs, 15 doubles, 37 RBIs, 42 runs, and 13 stolen bases over 141 games played.
Â
At Coastal, Motter was a 2009 Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball and Ping! Baseball Freshman All-American, a 2010 All-Big South first-team selection, and a member of the 2011 Big South All-Tournament team. Over 187 games played from 2009-11, he hit .303 with 18 home runs, 53 doubles, 110 RBIs, and 37 stolen bases.
Â
However, he is mostly remembered for his smooth play in the infield, as Motter was named to the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year watch list and ranks fourth overall in CCU history in fielding assists with 501 and is sixth in double plays turned with 96.
