Women's Soccer Tallies Double OT Victory, Sunday

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team opened the season in victorious fashion, defeating the visiting Wofford Terriers 1-0 on Sarah Allen's first career goal as a Chanticleer in the 110th minute Sunday afternoon at the CCU Intramural Field.

With the win, the Chanticleers improve to 1-0-0 overall, while Wofford drops to 1-1-0 overall.

"What a great way to start the season and to pick up the win made it even more special," head coach Paul Hogan said. "I was especially proud of the effort and determination the ladies played with today. The weather made it tough on everyone and I thought we did a great job of handling that adversity."

Wofford looked to strike early, taking the first shot of the game just seven minutes into the contest. CCU looked to counter, as Carleigh Frilles' shot to the low center of the goal in the 12th minute was easily scooped up by Wofford's Maria Mon. Back-to-back shots from the Chanticleers by Mackenzie Cherry and Loranna Austin just five minutes later were also stopped. At the break, Coastal Carolina led 9-3 in total shots, with five on goal to Wofford's one.

Following the halftime period, the two teams would see heavy rainfall for the majority of the second half, as both teams continued to get quality shots on goal but were unable to convert and the regulation ended at 0-0.

In the first overtime, the Chanticleers had a corner kick four minutes into play and had a shot go wide at the midpoint. Coastal Carolina added a corner kick with two minutes remaining, but the ball was punched away by Wofford's Caroline Doss in goal.

Doss also saved a shot a minute into the second overtime period before the Chanticleers scored in the low left corner on a shot by Allen with 56 seconds remaining, as she connected on a pass from Taylor Tolson, her first assist of the season.

"We had been so close (to scoring) several times in the match, but couldn't get it in the net, but that final play was a nice play that fortunately was the match-winner," head coach Hogan said. "Taylor (Tolson) made a nice entry pass into the front of the net and Sarah (Allen) was breaking into the open as the pass arrived. It was a nice way to pick up the win."

CCU finished the match with 24 shots, while Wofford posted just six. Allen and Megan Brouse each recorded a game-high four shots for the Chanticleers. The Chants also found the advantage in shots on goal tallying 12 to the Terriers three. The visitors did however find the advantage in saves recording 11 to CCU's three.

Coastal Carolina returns to the pitch next Sunday night, as the Chants will play host to the College of Charleston with a 6 p.m. ET kickoff from CCU Soccer Stadium.
