Chants Add First Win of Season Against Iowa in Three Sets

Coastal stifles the Iowa attack with 15 total blocks

CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team improved to 1-1 on Saturday night as they closed out the Coastal Carolina Invitational with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-20) sweep of the Iowa Hawkeyes at the HTC Center.

With the help of 15 blocks on the night, CCU held the Hawkeyes to a .061 hitting percentage for the match. Sophomore Nyla Shepherd led the Chanticleers in the win with seven block assists out of the 15 total for the team.

Prior to the evening's match, CCU's highest output over the past five seasons had been 19 total blocks at the 2019 Hawkeye Invitational against these same Hawkeyes.

Graduate student Ella Saada sparked the Chants offensively on the evening with 14 kills while hitting .345 on 29 attempts.

Saada helped the Chants jump out to the 1-0 set advantage with five of her 14 kills, hitting .556 in the opening stanza.

Super senior Ani Bozdeva aided Saada in set two as the duo combined for 11 of the Chanticleers' 17 kills. Saada continued her hot start to the match, adding five more kills with a .800 hitting percentage. The Razlog, Bulgaria native, hit at a .545 clip, chipping in with six putaways. Junior Brigitta Petrenko navigated her hitters through the Iowa block, adding 10 assists.

In set two, CCU used two 4-0 runs to earn the victory. With CCU holding a 9-8 lead, Coastal used a kill and three consecutive blocks from redshirt senior Christina Nance (2) and Saada to jump out to a 13-8 lead. The Chanticleers wrapped up the set with another run of four consecutive points from kills from Saada and Nance (2).

Coastal Carolina started out set three on a 14-4 run, but its 10-point lead slowly evaporated as Iowa cut the Coastal lead to 22-18. Hannah Clayton added four of her seven kills on the night in the final set. However, CCU held on to close out the match and earn their first victory of the season and improve to 1-1

Petrenko and fellow Chant setter Marija Borcic combined for 26 assists. Petrenko led the Chants with 14, while Borcic added 12.

Bozdeva surpassed her previous career-high of 15 digs versus Troy on Oct. 22, 2020, with 18 digs in the three-set sweep of the Hawkeyes.

Iowa setter Bailey Ortega led all players in the match with 28 assists on the night.
