Women’s Volleyball Defeats Northwestern State, 3-1, to Open Ole Miss Invite

Bozdeva tallies 17 kills, Petrenko notches 11th career double-double in win over Lady Demons

OXFORD, Miss. – The Chanticleer women's volleyball team improved to 2-1 on the season as they opened up the Ole Miss Invitational versus the Northwestern State Lady Demons on Friday morning inside the Gillom Athletics Performance Center.

CCU defeated the NSU by the score of 25-16, 25-17, 22-25, and 25-15 behind super senior Ani Bozdeva match-high 17 kills and graduate student Ella Saada's 13. CCU setter Brigitta Petrenko notched her 11th career double-double. The junior had a match-high 25 assists and 11 digs.

Saada sparked the Chanticleers to a 1-0 set advantage with six of her 13 kills in the match. Bozdeva was vital to the CCU attack in the first set as the team scored six points while she was at the end line.

The Chanticleers jumped out to a nine-point lead in set two, 12-3, behind four service aces. Petrenko got CCU on top 1-0 in the set with the team's first, but it was Saada's three service aces during the opening rally of the second set that gave Coastal Carolina five consecutive points.

The first eight points in set three had a combined six attack errors between the two schools. In turn, the Lady Demons were able to capitalize on eight total CCU attack errors throughout set three to force a fourth and final set.

The two teams played an even fourth set before the Chanticleers pulled away late to win convincingly.

With the score tied 14-14 in set four, the Chanticleers went on a 10-1 run to finish the match and defeat Northwestern State, 3-1. In the fourth set, graduate student Doris Carter subbed in at 19-14 and helped Coastal close out the match with three of her nine kills in the match.

Chanticleer libero Lina Perugini tallied her second 20-dig match of the season with 23 in the victory.

Kate Idrogo led NSU with eight kills, while teammate Autumn Gentry had a team-high 13 assists in the loss.

The Chanticleers will return to action as they take on Ole Miss at 7:30 p.m. later tonight in Oxford. The match will be available with the SEC+ app.
