Irungaray's Golden-Goal Snaps Chants' Winless Streak

CONWAY, S.C. – It was Gianna Irungaray's 92nd-minute golden-goal that snapped a four-game losing streak, as the Coastal Carolina women's soccer team downed Sun Belt foe App State 2-1 in overtime on Sunday afternoon at the CCU Soccer Stadium.

With the win, the Chanticleers improve to 3-4-1 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play while the Mountaineers fall to 4-4-1 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play. Notably, Sunday's victory marked the first conference win for CCU this season.

"It's always tough playing conference games," head coach Paul Hogan said. "I thought our energy in the second half was fantastic. [We] came out to an early goal. I thought we had momentum, we were good."

Coastal's Megan Brouse tallied her second goal of the season less than a minute following the halftime break to give the hosts a 1-0 lead in the 46th minute. Brouse's goal marked her second consecutive goal in as many matches.

A set-piece goal in the 64th minute by App State tied the contest at 1-all as Sarah Widderich's corner kick was knocked in by fellow Mountaineer Oliva Cohen.

The two teams were unable to break the scoreline over the remainder of the second half and, Coastal Carolina headed to its fourth overtime match of the season.

Just two minutes into the first overtime period, freshman Gianna Irungaray lept above the traffic to head in her first career goal on a pass from Sarah Allen who tallied her second assist of the season to earn the 2-1 victory.

CCU ended the afternoon with a 16-9 shooting advantage, while also earning an 8-5 edge on shots on frame. Taylor Tolson's three shots were a game-high while Ella Schad recorded two shots on goal. In goal, App State found the advantage tallying six saves to Coastal's four.

Coastal Carolina now prepares to welcome ULM to CCU Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 26. Kickoff is set from noon E.T. from Conway.
