VERONA, Wis. – The Coastal Carolina University men's golf team opened the fall portion of the 2021-22 schedule with a 10-over 298 in the opening round of the Badger Invitational on Sunday afternoon, putting them in a tie for 11th place after the first round.
Junior
Seth Taylor led the Chants with the team's low score after carding a one-over 73 in the opening round. Taylor finished his round with four birdies and five bogeys. He will go into tomorrow's second round tied for 24th.
Connor Newton and
Gavin Noble also had strong performances as both shot a two-over 74, and are tied for 37th. Newton had three birdies and three bogeys, but added a double-bogey on the 14th hole to push his score over-par on the day.
Noble really had an up-and-down round. He opened play with five bogeys on the first nine holes, but turned that around on the back nine with four birdies, including three consecutive on holes 13, 14, and 15.
Garrett Cooper shot a five-over 77 in the opening round and will enter tomorrow's second round tied for 61st.
Tyler Gray shot an eight-over 80 on the day. After shooting a 41 on the front nine, Gary shaved two strokes off that score on the back nine to card a 39. He is tied for 75th.
Freshman
Trey Crenshaw is making his CCU debut while playing as an individual in the invitational. He finished his round shooting a three-over 75 (36-39) and is tied for 45th.
Sam Houston State was one of only two teams to break par on the opening day, and leads the event after firing an eight-under 280. Illinois State was the other under-par team, and stands second at two-under (286).
Only eight shots stand between third and 11th place as Iowa State stands third after their two-over 290. Northern Illinois, South Dakota State, and host Wisconsin are tied for fourth after carding three-over 291's.
Cincinnati is seventh after shooting a four-over (292) with Eastern Michigan and Toledo tied for eighth after posting a seven-over 295.
Abilene Christian is eight-over and in 10th with Augustana and High Point tied with the Chants for 11th after also posting a 10-over 298 with Xavier next at 16-over (304).
