CONWAY, S.C. – Graduate transfer Doris Carter led the Chanticleers to a four-set victory (26-28, 25-15, 28-26, 25-17) over the Arkansas State Red Wolves (10-4, 1-1 SBC) on Sunday at the HTC Center. Carter's season-high 21 kills improved Coastal Carolina to 8-4 overall on the season and 2-0 in Sun Belt Conference play.
Junior setter Brigitta Petrenko became the ninth player in Coastal's history with at least 2,000 career assists as she led Coastal with a season-high 43 assists in the win.
Chants' libero Lina Perugini tallied a game-high 23 digs, her fifth 20-dig performance of the season.
Both teams played a highly-contested match as it featured 39 ties and 16 lead changes.
Macy Putt led the Red Wolves to a 28-26 set one win with four kills on 14 swings. Brianna Hollingshed led A-State with three blocks of the team's four-team blocks. Arkansas State held CCU to a .208 hitting percentage, but Carter and super senior Ani Bozdeva combined for 11 kills in the set one loss for CCU.
The Chanticleers flipped the switch in set two as five players had at least two kills apiece. Coastal Carolina jumped out to a 15-10 lead as Petrenko was an integral part of their early success. The Eger, Hungary native was the server on seven of the 15 points, tallied a service ace, and had seven assists in the run. The teal and bronze never relinquished the lead from that point forward, where they won 25-15. Coastal's offense hit an outstanding .448 while limiting ASU to .115.
Coastal held the largest lead of three points (8-5) in set three for both teams. From that point in set three, neither team could extend their advantage to no more than two points. The set also featured 19 ties and 10 lead changes. The Chanticleers held off two Arkansas State set points, including Carter's service ace that tied the score at 26-26. CCU finished off A-State, 28-26, on a three-point swing that featured back-to-back kills from Petrenko and Bozdeva. The Bulgaria native, Bozdeva led the Chants in the third set with nine kills with no errors on 19 attempts.
The Chanticleers earned the 25-17 fourth-set victory as they took the lead and never looked back. Carter finished off the Red Wolves in the final set with six kills. Perugini controlled the Chanticleers' backline defense with six digs and helped hold ASU to a .171 hitting percentage in the final set.
Bozdeva tallied her eighth double-digit kill match of the season with 17 in the victory.
Junior middle blocker Ilse Sinnige helped Coastal hold the Red Wolves to a .214 hitting percentage with a match-high six blocks.
Putt led Arkansas State with 19 kills, while the setter tandem of Lauren Musante and Julianna Cramer recorded 19 assists apiece. Libero Tatum Ticknor led the team with 18 digs in the loss.
The Chanticleers will return to action next weekend as they will be on the road in Georgia for a pair of matches. On Friday, Oct. 1, the Chants will take on Georgia Southern at 6 p.m. ET and on Saturday, Oct. 2, they will visit the Georgia State Panthers at 7 p.m. ET.
