Coastal Carolina Falls to Ole Miss in Straight Sets

Coastal falls in straight sets for the first time since 2018

OXFORD, Miss. – The Chanticleer women's volleyball team dropped to 2-2 on the season after a straight-sets loss to Ole Miss in their second match of the day at the Ole Miss Invitational at the Gillom Athletics Performance Center.

The Rebels defeated CCU 25-18, 25-17, and 31-29 behind their front line which totaled 14 blocks on the evening. Payton Brgoch and Samantha Schnita led their team with seven blocks apiece.

The straight-sets loss is the first for the Chanticleers since Oct. 19, 2018, at Appalachian State.

In the first set, Ole Miss held CCU to a .143 hitting percentage with three blocks. Offensively, the weekend hosts hit .458 as a team, led by GG Carvacho's five kills on nine attempts.

The Chanticleers struggled again offensively in the second set as they were held to a .000 hitting percentage. In the second stanza, Ole Miss' Anna Bair led her team with four of her match-high 12 kills. Sasha Ratliff had four block assists in the set two win.

Coastal Carolina had different thoughts as the Rebels looked to end the match quickly in the third set. However, CCU scrapped and clawed to the very end as the set featured 12 lead changes, including Coastal taking the lead for the first time since 1-0 in set one. Neither team held a lead of more than three points in the final set, including the Chanticleers earning three set points. The teal and bronze made it a close match down the stretch as CCU held Ole Miss to a .258 hitting percentage while picking up three team blocks but ultimately fell in the very end.

Rebel setter Kylee McLaughlin led all players with 31 assists in the straight-set win.

Offensively, Ole Miss was led by Sasha Ratliff with nine kills.

Coastal setters Brigitta Petrenko and Marija Borcic added 12 and 11 assists, respectively.

Former SEC standout and current Chanticleer Doris Carter led the Chants with eight kills.

Coastal Carolina will return to the court on Saturday with a noon ET match versus the UTSA Roadrunners to close out the Ole Miss Invitational.
