CONWAY, S.C. – On Monday afternoon, the Coastal Carolina men's tennis team clashed with The Citadel at the Lynn Stevens Tennis Complex in a doubleheader.
It proved to be a great day for the host Chanticleers, as they swept the visitors from Charleston, S.C. by a final tally of 7-0 in both matches.
Match #1 – Coastal Carolina 7, The Citadel 0
In doubles action, the Chants yielded just six total points across four matches to the Bulldogs. The super senior tandem of
Federico Garnier and
Diego Giraldo edged Hayden Shoemake and Zvonko Bencedic 7-5.
Niccolo Rossi and
Bastien Huon blanked Lucas Robins and Sebastian Kamieniecki 6-0. The pairings of
Daiki Tanabe and
Carlos Berna Ruiz, as well as
Neil O'Connor and
Guilherme Toresan, each picked up a 6-1 victory in the No. 3 and No. 4 flights, respectively.
The Chants expanded their advantage to 4-0 after a trio of straight-set victories by Rossi, Toresan, and Tanabe in singles play. Berna Ruiz and Huon added victories in the third and top flights to make a 6-0 lead for the home team. Giraldo sealed the sweep with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 straight-set victory, evening the Chants' overall record at one win and one loss on the young season.

The Chants continued to catch fire in the afternoon tilt, beginning with doubles as they held the Bulldogs to five total points in four matches. O'Connor and Toresan, along with Berna Ruiz and Tanabe each picked up 6-0 wins over Schainblatt and Bush, and Darby and Minnich, respectively. On the second court, Garnier and Giraldo powered past Robins and Kamieniecki 6-1, while Rossi and Huon held off Shoemake and Bencedic 6-4.
In singles action, the Chants notched straight-set victories in five of the six flights. In the final contest of the evening, Garnier rallied from one set down to win a barn burner over Zvonko Bencedic 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the second flight.
The Chants improve to 2-1 overall on the campaign and will return to action on Friday, Feb. 4 at 1 p.m. ET in a road match against South Carolina State.
