HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team was swept 3-0 (19-25, 18-25, 17-25) by James Madison on the road in Harrisonburg, Va., on Friday evening. With the loss, the Chanticleers fell to 15-8 on the season and 7-3 in Sun Belt play. The Dukes improved to 15-4 overall and 9-1 in the conference with the win.
CCU's
Ella Saada finished with a team-high 11 kills, while
Kendall Harris added seven kills. Setter
Brigitta Pentrenko also added five kills and dished out17 assists.
Defensively,
Christina Nance led the way with four blocks, while
Lauren Malone added a pair of stops. Defensive specialist
Lina Perugini (17), Saada (9), and Petrenko (5) combined for 31 of the team's 41 digs.
In the opening set, Coastal jumped out to a 4-1 lead only to see JMU storm back to take a 7-4 lead with six unanswered points. The Chants' Petrenko put down a pair of spikes to cut the Dukes' advantage to one at 7-6. After James Madison opened its lead to four at 11-7 with a 4-1 surge, CCU battled back to even the set at 14-14 with a 7-3 run, highlighted by three kills by Harris.
JMU used a four-point burst to open its lead to 18-14 before Coastal closed the gap to two points at 18-16. The 16th point was the start of four-consecutive points by block assists by both teams. James Madison picked up the opening set win at 25-19 closing out the set with a 6-2 advantage to take a 1-0 match lead.
Despite trailing in the match 1-0, Coastal took an early 4-2 lead to start the second set with the help of a pair of JMU attack errors. The Dukes outscored the visitors from Conway, S.C., 9-3 to open an 11-7 advantage only to see the Chants fight back to cut the host team's lead to one at 14-13 highlighted by Petrenko and Saada tallying two spikes each.
After seeing James Madison increase its lead to 18-14, CCU scored three unanswered points as kills by Nance and Harris sandwiched a Saada service ace to cut the Dukes' lead to 18-16. JMU claimed the second set with a 7-2 run for the 25-18 win and a 2-0 match advantage.
Sensing blood, JMU opened the set with an early 5-1 lead, just to see the Chanticleers fight back with three-straight points sparked by a kill by Saada and capped by a
Nyla Shepherd service ace to trail by one at 5-4. Over the next several rallies the Dukes scored two points to every one of the Chants' points to pull out to a 13-8 advantage before increasing their lead to 16-9 with a 3-1 burst. Both teams traded the next 17 points for James Madison to claim the three-set sweep with a 25-17 set-three win.
Coastal Carolina will return to the HTC Center on the campus of Coastal Carolina University, as the Chanticleers will host conference newcomer Marshall. The two teams will take to the court on Friday, Oct. 28, at 6 p.m. ET, and on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 1 p.m. ET.
