NEW ORLEANS – Coastal Carolina football had not one, but two Chanticleers earn Sun Belt Conference recognition for their play last week in the road win at Marshall (Oct. 29), as redshirt sophomore linebacker
Shane Bruce was named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week, while true freshman punter
Evan Crenshaw was tabbed the Special Teams Player of the Week.
Bruce had a career night at Marshall, as he led the Black Swarm defense with 11 total tackles. He also had 0.5 tackles-for-loss, one fumble recovery, and a quarterback hurry in the Chants' SBC road win.
Not only did his 11 stops lead the team, but he was key in the "Black Swarm" defense holding the Thundering Herd to just 87 rushing yards on 37 attempts, an average of 2.4 yards per carry. Marshall had entered the game ranked 23rd in the nation with an average of 204.0 rushing yards per game.
With the game at Marshall being a low-scoring contest, special teams played a huge role in the game. Crenshaw punted the ball eight times for 339 yards, which included a career-long 50-yard punt. He averaged 42.4 yards per punt attempt and had six of his eight punts downed, as he kept pushing The Herd back towards their own goal line. Marshall's average starting field position for the game was at its own 27-yard line.
Bruce and Crenshaw join
Matthew McDoom (Special Teams – Sept. 12) and
Grayson McCall (Offensive – Oct. 3) as having received a weekly conference award this year.
The Chanticleers (7-1, 4-1 Sun Belt) will return to action this Thursday, Nov. 3, as the Chants will host Appalachian State (5-3, 2-2 Sun Belt) at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
Reserved seating and parking for the midweek contest are sold out.
