CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team will return to the road to close out its non-conference schedule on Wednesday afternoon, as the Chanticleers will travel to Columbia, S.C., to battle the No. 1 South Carolina Gamecocks.
The Chanticleers are 5-5 on the season after clipping the UNCW Seahawks 69-53 last Sunday. South Carolina enters play undefeated at 11-0 after dispatching Charleston Southern 87-23 in the Gamecocks last outing.
LAST TIME OUT
Coastal defeated the Seahawks 69-53 to claim their fifth win of the season, all of which have come at home in the HTC Center. The Chants used a second-half surge to take control of the contest and picked up their fourth straight win over UNCW. Graduate student
Aja Blount scored a game-high 19 points to lead three Chanticleers in double-digit scoring.
HISTORY BETWEEN COASTAL AND SOUTH CAROLINA
The two teams will be meeting for just the sixth time on Wednesday, as Coastal trails in the all-time series to the Gamecocks at 6-0. The last time the two teams played, South Carolina claimed a 70-50 home win in December 2004. CCU has hosted the Gamecocks just once in the series back in January 1991.
ABOUT COASTAL
The Chants are averaging 73.6 points per game while shooting 43.0 percent from the field and 31.3 from three-point range. Defensively, Coastal has allowed 62.7 points per game while its opponents are shooting 39.8 percent from the floor. The Chanticleers have won the rebounding battle at 379-326 this season.
Blount leads three Chants in double-digit scoring with 17.5 points per game, while
Arin Freeman and
Anaya Barney are scoring 10.7 and 10.4, respectively. Aside from scoring, Blount leads the team with 8.7 rebounds per game with Freeman and Barney adding 5.5 and 3.8 boards, respectively.
ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA
As a team, the Gamecocks are averaging 81.5 points per contest while allowing 44.3 points per game. South Carolina has outshot its opponents 46.6 percent to 26.9 percent from the floor. On the year, USC has outrebounded its opponents by 20 boards per game at 50.6 to 30.5 rebounds per game.
Zia Cooke leads the team in scoring with 14.1 points per game, while Aliyah Boston and Chloe Kitts have chipped in with 12.5 and 10.0 points per contest, respectively. Boston (9.5) and Kamilla Cardoso (8.5) lead South Carolina on the boards, as they both are grabbing more than eight rebounds per contest.
