LYNCHBURG, Va. – The future of the Coastal Carolina women's indoor track & field program looks bright, as the Chants' youth performed well on Friday with a total of nine different underclassmen leading the way for the women in Teal, Bronze, and Black on day one of the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational hosted by Liberty.
In the women's 60-meter prelims, the Chants had two runners qualify for the finals in
Mariah McCord (7.73) and
Zahria Jones (7.77), as McCord placed third in the prelims with her personal best time, while Jones was tied for sixth.
The duo finished 13th and 14th in the 60-meter semifinals, as McCord matched her prelims time of 7.73 to finish just in front of Jones and her time of 7.75.
The Coastal tandem of
Shani'a Bellamy and
Sydney Clemens raced their way into the finals of the 60-meter hurdles, as Bellamy recorded a personal-best time of 8.63 in the semifinals to place fourth. Her time was the eighth-best time in CCU history and put her one spot in front of Clemens who placed fifth with a time of 8.65 to move on to the finals on Saturday.
In the 400-meter finals, CCU had not one but two top-10 performances, as freshman
Mekenze Kelley finished in eighth with her time of 56.69, just outside of CCU's top-10, while sophomore
Amaryah White placed 10th with her time of 57.07.
Coastal picked up another top-15 finish in the women's pole vault event, as redshirt sophomore
Kynnedy Dennis set a new personal-best height of 3.70 meters to finish in a log jam at 14th overall. Her career-high mark is the third-best on CCU's indoor all-time performance list.
