CLEMSON, S.C. – It was a back and forth contest on Saturday evening in the Upstate as the Coastal Carolina men's tennis team clashed with in-state foe Clemson in a regional showdown. It came down to the last couple of matches, but the Tigers squeaked by the Chanticleers by a 4-3 margin.
The Chants got off to a great start in doubles by winning two of the three matches.
Bastien Huon and
Niccolo Rossi edged Jorge Plans Gonzalez and Maxwell Smith 7-6 on the second court, while
Steve Mundt and
Carlos Berna Ruiz doubled up Trey Stinchcomb and Daniel Labrador 6-3.
In singles action, it required all six matchups in order to determine the victor.
Diego Giraldo tallied a 6-0, 6-1 win over Stinchbomb on the fourth court. In the fifth flight, Rossi dropped the first set, but responded well and earned an 0-6, 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Labrador. In the No. 6 match,
Daiki Tanabe dropped a tough one in three sets to Maxwell Smith 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Court two broke the three-all deadlock, where Ryuhei Azuma and
Federico Garnier waged a lengthy battle. Azuma held off Garnier by a final margin of 6-2, 6-7, 6-1.
Coastal Carolina will continue their road trek next weekend with a trip up to Campbell on Friday, Feb. 25, for a 1 p.m. ET match.
