Coastal Earns First-ever Win Over Elon in Overtime

Coastal Carolina women’s lacrosse team moves to 2-1 on the season

ELON, N.C. – Transfer graduate attacker Hannah Demis scored the game-winning goal with 45 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to give the Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team its first-ever win over the Elon Phoenix on the road on Sunday afternoon.
 
With the win, the Chanticleers improved to 2-1 on the young season, while Elon remained winless at 0-4 with the loss.
 
Coastal's Lauren Cremen led nine Chant scorers with four goals and two assists for six points on the day, while Demis recorded her first hat-trick as a Chanticleer with three goals and two assists for five points. The Phoenix saw six players record goals with Gillian Curran (4 goals) and Bella Feldmann (3 goals) each having hat-tricks with Margaret Stephan, Hannah McCarthy, and Cierra Hopson finding the back of the net twice each.
 
CCU's Avery McIlwaine opened the scoring with just over one minute expiring from the game clock on an unassisted goal before the Phoenix answered with back-to-back goals by Stephan and Feldmann as Elon went up 2-1. Bethany Bruck evened the match-up at 2-2, with her first career goal. McCarthy and Curran sandwiched a Cremen goal for the 4-3 score at the end of the first period of action.
 
Coastal evened up the match as Avery Snyder beat the host goalkeeper at 4-4 before Elon fired off three-straight goals by Curran, Feldmann, and Cate Mackel. Down 7-4 with just under seven minutes left in the first half, senior Megan Bozzi found Cremen breaking in front of the net to spark a 6-0 Chanticleer run, while McIlwaine finished off the run by filling the back of the net with seven seconds remaining in the second quarter off the pass from Hannah Close for the 10-7 Coastal lead.
 
Elon outscored Coastal 3-1 in the third period to cut the Chanticleers' lead to 11-10. Curran and Feldmann combined for three goals with Curran getting the first and third goals in the period, while Cremen found the back of the net for the fourth time with one second remaining in the third quarter.
 
Coastal's Monica Manley and Sydney Tornetta opened the fourth-quarter scoring to put the visiting Chanticleers up 13-11 with 11:29 left in regulation. McCarthy and Hopson combined to finish the scoring for the Phoenix to put the home team up 14-13 with 3:03 remaining on the game clock. With 2:19 left to play, CCU's Bozzi hit the biggest shot of the match to even the score up at 14-14, setting up the game-winner for her teammate Demis in overtime.
 
Coastal Carolina and Elon both fired 24 shots for the match, while the Chanticleers won 19 draw controls to the Phoenix's 13.
