CCU earns first Sun Belt win of season

CONWAY, S.C. – Less than 48 hours after an emotional back-and-forth contest on Friday, the Coastal Carolina men's tennis team fell behind early to the UT Arlington Mavericks but battled back to pick up a 4-3 Sun Belt Conference win at home on Sunday.

The Mavs claimed the doubles point by winning two of the three matches played in that portion of the contest, which gave them the 1-0 lead entering singles play.

Niccolo Rossi put the men in teal on the board with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 straight-set win over Maks Lukman on court four to start singles play. The Mavericks then added a win of their own in singles action to take a 3-1 advantage with three matches left.

Federico Garnier rallied from a set down to defeat Miguel Cabrera 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 on the second court. Moments later, Neil O'Connor won a barn burner on court six 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, which tied the overall match at three.

The spotlight shined on court five, where Daiki Tanabe and Daichi Akiyoshi collided in a tooth-and-nail battle. Tanabe came through in the clutch with a 4-6, 5-7, 7-5 triumph, giving the Chanticleers their first Sun Belt victory on the season.

Coastal Carolina (8-8, 1-1 SBC) will make a road trip to the state of Alabama this upcoming weekend for two Sun Belt matchups, starting on Friday at 11 a.m. ET against Troy.
