Coastal and No. 20 Clemson Set to Clash Tuesday Night

Coastal will open up an eight-game road trip on Tuesday at Clemson

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina baseball team will open up an eight-game road trip on Tuesday night, March 22, as the Chanticleers will take on No. 20 nationally-ranked Clemson at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson, S.C. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. ET.
 
The Chanticleers are 11-7-1 overall this season, while the Tigers are 15-4 overall and ranked in five of the six national polls, including coming in at No. 20 in the Baseball America Top-25 poll.
 
CHARTING THE CHANTS
• Coastal Carolina enters the midweek bout at Clemson on Tuesday night at 11-7-1 overall and 1-1-1 in Sun Belt Conference play.
• The Chanticleers are coming off a 17-17, eight-inning, tie with ULM on Sunday, March 20, as the game was called due to travel curfew for the Warhawks.
• Overall this season, the Chanticleers are 1-1 in midweek contests with a road loss at UNCW (March 2) and a home win over then-No. 30 Wake Forest (March 8).
• The CCU offense is hitting .281 with 129 runs scored so far this season, including driving in 115 RBIs overall.
• The Chants rank in the top-15 in all of NCAA D1 baseball in sacrifice bunts (eighth) and sacrifice flies (11th), and lead the Sun Belt in on-base percentage at .405 on the season.
• The Coastal pitching staff has posted a 4.34 ERA on the season and fanned 166 batters over 164.0 innings pitched.
 
ABOUT THE TIGERS
• Clemson enters the midweek contest at 15-4 overall and 1-2 in the ACC having lost two of three games in the weekend series versus nationally-ranked Miami last weekend.
• After starting the season at 14-0, the Tigers have lost four out of their last five games, including a four-game losing streak.
• One of those four losses came at home in midweek action versus Georgia State (March 15) out of the Sun Belt Conference, as the Panthers defeated the Tigers 6-1 last week.
• Clemson's offense is hitting .291 on the season and has scored 160 runs over the first 19 games, averaging 8.4 runs per game.
• The CU pitching staff is averaging 9.5 strikeouts per nine innings and is holding the opponents to a .219 batting average for the season.
• The Tigers' team ERA of 3.14 ranks third in the ACC and 20th in all of NCAA Division 1 baseball.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES
• The Chanticleers are just 10-47 all-time versus the Clemson Tigers.
• Coastal has won just six times out of 40 tries at Clemson and hasn't won at Doug Kingsmore Stadium since 2012.
• The Tigers have won each of the last three meetings between the two teams and seven of the last 10 meetings dating back to 2012.
 
MIDWEEK MATCHUPS
• Coastal Carolina is just 1-1 in midweek action this season, as their last midweek matchup versus NC State (March 16) was washed out due to rain.
• The Chanticleers, who played Monday afternoon games over the first two weeks of the season as part of two weekend tournaments, suffered a 9-4 road loss at UNCW (March 2) but picked up a 4-3 win in midweek action over then-No. 30 Wake Forest (March 8).
 
ROAD GAUNTLET
• With Tuesday's road contest at Clemson (March 22), the Chanticleers will have an eight-game road trip which will see Coastal play at Clemson, Texas State (March 25-27), Wake Forest (March 30), and Arkansas State (April 1-3).
• The Chanticleers are 0-4 on the road so far this season.
 
IN-STATE SHOWDOWN
• Coastal will be facing its first in-state foe of the season in the Clemson Tigers on Tuesday.
• The Chanticleers are scheduled to play just two opponents from the Palmetto State in Clemson (March 22 and May 17) and College of Charleston (April 6 and April 26).
• Clemson has played five games versus three in-state opponents this season, going 5-0 overall with wins over College of Charleston (Feb. 22), USC Upstate (March 1), and three against South Carolina (March 4-6).
 
EXPECT SOME FIREWORKS
• Fans can expect some fireworks on Tuesday night, as both the Chanticleers and Tigers enter the midweek clash having scored double-digit runs in each of their last outings.
• Coastal totaled 17 runs on 19 hits in a 17-17, eight-inning time-limit draw versus ULM on Sunday (March 20).
• Clemson tallied 20 runs on 20 hits in a 20-5 victory over nationally-ranked Miami in their last contest on Sunday (March 20).
 
OFFENSIVE BREAKOUT
• After hitting just .193 and scoring just 33 runs on 47 base hits over eight games from March 4-13, the Chanticleers' offense broke out the bats in the weekend series versus ULM (March 18-20) last time out.
• In the three-game Sun Belt Conference series last weekend versus the Warhawks, the Chants hit .347 (33-for-95) with 28 runs and 27 RBIs on 33 total hits.
• Six different Chants hit over .400 on the weekend, led by Zack Beach who hit .667 (4-for-6) with two home runs, seven RBIs, and five runs scored. Tyler Johnson hit .571 (4-for-7) with a home run, two doubles, five RBIs, and two runs scored, while Tanner Garrison (4-for-8) with three RBIs and three runs scored.
• The Chanticleers scored a season-high 17 runs on a season-high 19 hits in the Sunday tie.
 
CARNEY GETS THE CALL
• Coastal will make the call to start super senior Elliot Carney (1-0, 5.21 ERA) for the Tuesday night tilt at Clemson (March 22).
• In his first season at CCU, Carney is 1-0 with a 5.21 ERA over five total appearances. He has struck out 27 hitters over 19.0 innings and is coming off striking out 10 batters over 4.1 innings in a win over Xavier (March 13) in game two of the doubleheader.
• Carney will be making his fourth start on the season Tuesday night, as he is 0-0 with a 5.27 ERA and 17 strikeouts over 13.2 innings over his three starts this season.
 
POWER OF THE 'PEN
• The Chanticleers' bullpen has been really good in CCU's 11 wins this season.
• Over the Chants' 11 wins, the bullpen is 7-0 with five saves and a 2.89 ERA.
• The bullpen arms have struck out 49 hitters compared to just 26 walks over 46.2 innings of relief and has held the opponents to a .206 batting average.
• However, in the seven losses the bullpen is 0-5 with a 7.48 ERA having allowed 18 earned runs over 21.2 innings pitched with 22 strikeouts, 17 walks, and a .375 opponent batting average.
