Chants Fall 8-2 to Bobcats, Friday

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team dropped game one of the three-game Sun Belt Conference series to Texas State, 8-2 on Friday night at St. John Stadium.

With the loss, CCU dropped to 12-15 overall and 1-6 in conference play. TXST improved to 15-13 overall and 3-4 in SBC play.

After three and a half scoreless innings, the Chanticleers were first on the board. Riley Zana started the bottom of the fourth inning off with a walk, followed by an Iyanla De Jesus double to left field. Maddy Jennings sent a sacrifice fly to the right field to advance all runners one base and send Zana up to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Texas State answered in the top of the fifth, as Cat Crenek singled past the shortstop before stealing second base. Hannah Earls advanced Crenek to third on a ground out to the second baseman. Ciara Trahan reached on a fielder's choice before advancing to second on the throw. A Chanticleer error allowed Crenek to cross home plate and make the score, 1-1.

The Bobcats used a five-run top of the six inning, before adding two more runs in the top of the seventh to push the Chants.

In the bottom of the sixth, De Jesus sent her seventh home run of the season into the palm trees in right-center field for Coastal's final run to make the score, 6-2.

At the plate, De Jesus finished the afternoon a perfect 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Notably, De Jesus was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle as the junior recorded a single, double, and home run against the Bobcats.

Kaitlin Beasley-Polko suffered the loss in the circle, as the graduate student allowed six runs off 10 hits in 5.2 innings of work. Raelee Brabham and Maddie Redman also saw action with Brabham allowing two runs off three hits.

Coastal Carolina and Texas State are set to rematch on Saturday, March 26, at 2 p.m. ET.
