Coastal Drops Saturday Contest to Texas State

CONWAY, S.C. – On a day dedicated to All-Abilities at The Ballpark at St. John Stadium, the Coastal Carolina softball team dropped its second straight contest to the Texas State Bobcats, 9-0 in six innings.

CCU dropped to 12-16 overall and 1-7 in Sun Belt Conference play with the loss. With the win, TXST improved to 16-13 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

Before the start of this afternoon's game, the Coastal Carolina softball team partnered with the Coastal LIFE Program and had a member of the program throw out a ceremonial first pitch. For more information about the LIFE Program, click here

Texas State took the lead in the top of the third inning as the Bobcats tallied two runs. Ciara Trahan singled past second base before a Kylie George bunt advanced Trahan to second. With runners on first and second, Hannah Earls' was out at first on a ground ball to second base but not before Trahan crossed the plate and put the visitors up 1-0. Sara Vanderford's RBI double past third base sent George home to make the score, 2-0.

In the bottom of the third inning, Makiya Thomas singled down the right-field before stealing second but Coastal would leave Thomas stranded. Notably, CCU left a runner on base in all but one inning of today's contest.

The Bobcats took control with a four-run fourth inning before a three-run top of the sixth inning to end the contest.

Coastal looked to answer in the bottom of the fifth inning as Jay Wrightsman reached base on a bunt down the line followed by a Payton Ebersole single to center field to advance Wrightsman one base. Riley Zana singled past third base to advance all runners, but CCU left three on base to end the inning.

Six different Chanticleers contributed to the offensive efforts as Coastal finished the afternoon with six hits. Notably, Iyanla De Jesus connected on her fourth hit in two games with her double to left field in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Nicolette Picone (5-6) suffered the loss for CCU in the circle, as the true freshman saw 3.2 innings of work. Picone allowed six runs on six hits. Mady Volpe and De Jesus also saw action today. De Jesus allowed three runs on two hits.

The Chanticleers and Bobcats rematch at 11:30 a.m. ET on Sunday.
