PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The Coastal Carolina University men's golf team shot a 21-over 597 (302-295) in the opening day of The Hayt Invitational on Sunday at the Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., putting them in a tie for sixth place after the first two rounds.
Tyler Gray led the Chanticleers with a solid one-under 143 (74-69) in the opening two rounds of action. After shooting a two-over 74 in the first round, Gray shot a three-under 69 in the afternoon round. He had a team-best nine birdies on the first day of action and is seventh heading into the final round.
Seth Taylor had a solid first day of action as well, shooting a three-over 147 (74-73) to place him in a tie for 17th after two rounds.
Connor Newton is tied for 49th after shooting an eight-over 152 (77-75) and
Luke Nelson is tied for 68th after carding a 12-over 156 (77-79).
Garrett Cooper shot a 14-over 158 (80-78) and is tied for 74th, while
Viktor Olund, playing as an individual, is 82nd after firing an 18-over 162 (85-77).
Only two teams finished under par on the opening day, as host North Florida and Charlotte both shot a four-under 572 to top the leaderboard. Liberty (+6, 582), Florida Gulf Coast (+10, 582), and LSU (+18, 594) make up the top five.
Tennessee is tied with the Chanticleers for sixth followed by Georgia Southern (+22, 598), UCF (+23, 599), and Arkansas State (+26, 602).
Rounding out the field are UAB and Louisville who are tied for 11th at +28, 603, while Jacksonville and North Texas are tied for 13th at +28, 604. Navy rounds out the field at +77, 653.
