SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Coastal Carolina University men's golf team is tied for seventh place at 3-over par with just a few holes left in the second round of the Desert Mountain Collegiate as play was suspended late in the second round at the Desert Mountain Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
The weather started off a lot better than it was at the end of the day as all 16 teams played significantly better in the morning round. CCU stood in a tie for seventh with a three-over 291 before the winds moved in as the second round got underway.
The Chants only have a few holes left in the second round which saw them shoot a 14-over as CCU battled the windy conditions.
After the first round of competition, both
Seth Taylor and
Connor Newton turned in under-par performances. Taylor shot a two-under 70 (35-35) to enter the second round tied for 10th. Newton shot a one-under 71 (36-35) and is tied for 17th.
Garrett Cooper was just a couple of strokes behind Newton, turning in a one-over 73 (37-36) in round one and is tied for 40th.
Tyler Gray is tied for 64th after shooting a five-over 77 (39-38), while
Trey Crenshaw is tied for 81st following his eight-over 80 (39-41) in today's round.
Luke Nelson, playing as an individual, had an outstanding opening 18 holes, carding a one-under 71, and is tied with teammate Newton for 17th.
Mississippi State was the leader after the first round with a solid 12-under 276. Sun Belt member Arkansas State was second after carding an eight-under 280, while fellow conference member Little Rock was third at two-under 286. Nebraska was fourth at one-under 287, with Southern Illinois and Michigan tied for fifth with a one-over 289.
Lipscomb and ULM were tied with CCU with a three-over 291, followed by UAB (+4, 292) and South Dakota State (+5, 293). Grand Canyon and UTEP were tied for 12th after each finished the opening round at six-over (294).
Santa Clara (+7, 295), Michigan's "B" team (+9, 297), and Northern Illinois (+10, 298) rounded out the field.
The second round will be completed Sunday morning starting at 10:40 a.m. ET. Play will then move directly into the third round immediately following. Live stats can be found at Golfstat.com, with a link to the live stats page at
