GAINESVILLE, Fla. – It was a historic day for the Coastal Carolina men's and women's track & field teams as they wrapped up the last day of the Tom Jones Invitational, as several school – and two Sun Belt Conference – records were either tied or broken.
On the women's side, the 4x100-meter relay team of
Kayla Sweeney,
Shani'a Bellamy,
Jermaisha Arnold, and
Melissa Jefferson crossed the line fifth in the event with a time of 43.58, which set both a NEW school and Sun Belt Conference record. It also is the seventh-best time in the NCAA this year.
Jefferson later claimed the top spot in the 100-meter dash, crossing the line first in 11.00, which became the new school record for the event and tied for the second-best time in NCAA this year. It was also a Sun Belt Conference record, as he shattered the previous record of 11.17 set back in 1993 by Twilet Malcolm of Louisiana.
Arnold set both a new personal best and school record in the 400-meter event with a time of 52.37, which ranks as the sixth-best time in NCAA this year.
Mekenze Kelley came home ninth with her time of 52.66, which was a personal best and the second-fastest time in school history. Kelley's time ranks 10th in NCAA this year for the event.
Bellamy went on to place 16th overall in the 100-meter hurdles with her personal-best time of 13.74, while
Sydney Clemens finished 24th overall with a new PR of 14:07. Both times rank fourth and eighth, respectively, in CCU's record books.
In the women's 800-meters, freshman
Amilia Wise-Sweat finished 33rd overall with her time of 2:15.59, which was the 10th-fastest time on CCU's outdoor track & field all-time performance list, while in the 3000-meters fellow first-year Chant
Meagan Moreno crossed the finish line in second overall with a time of 10:08.65.
In the field events,
Alexis Estep etched her name in CCU's record books with a throw of 13.43 meters in the shot put event, as her new personal-best mark ranks sixth all-time and placed her 21st overall.
On the men's side,
Reggie Barlow set a new personal best and school record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.36.
Keshon Sapp crossed the line in 10.54, which is a personal best and is tied for the fifth-best time in school history.
Robert Johnson set a personal best in the 400-meters with a time of 48.61, while CCU's
Aaron Pierce posted a new personal-best mark of 13.38 meters in the shot put.
Next up for the Chants is a trip to Columbia for the University of South Carolina Open, which begins at 9 a.m. ET on Saturday, April 23.
