Softball Drops Two at Louisiana, Saturday

Lafayette, La. – On a Saturday Sun Belt Conference doubleheader, the Coastal Carolina softball team dropped both contests to (RV) Louisiana at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park.

Coastal dropped to 18-27 overall and 4-17 in Sun Belt Conference play with the two losses, while the Ragin' Cajuns improved to 38-11 overall and 20-4 in conference play.

Game 1: Louisiana 6, Coastal Carolina 3
The Chanticleers struck first as Abbey Montoya singled to left field followed by a Riley Zana ground out that advanced Montoya to second base. Iyanla De Jesus was intentionally walked before Keirstin Roose sent an RBI single down the left-field line and drove home Montoya to put CCU up 1-0 in the top of the first.

Louisiana answered as the hosts used a four-run bottom of the first inning to take a lead over the Chanticleers, 4-1.

In the bottom of the third Sophie Piskos singled down the right-field line before stealing second. Alexa Langeliers drew a base on balls followed by a Melissa Mayeux triple down the left-field line that sent home Piskos and Langeliers to make the score 6-1.

Madison Hudson singled through the left side in the top of the seventh to start the Chants rally before pinch-runner Payton Ebersole advanced to second on a passed ball. Makiya Thomas doubled to left-center field which drove home Ebersole to make the score 6-2. Thomas advanced to third base on a passed ball followed by a Zana single down the left-field line before she advanced on a Ragin' Cajuns throwing error which also scored Thomas to make the score 6-3.

In the circle, Mady Volpe (2-5) suffered the loss while Thomas and Zana led the offensive efforts at the plate in game one both going 2-for-4.

Game 2: Louisiana 7, Coastal Carolina 3
Coastal Carolina used back-to-back home runs in the top of the first inning from Makiya Thomas (6 HR) and Riley Zana (9 HR) to take an early 2-0 lead over the Ragin' Cajuns.

Maddy Jennings continued the Chants' hitting party as the freshman singled to right field in the top of the second inning before pinch-runner Da'Vidria Robinson advanced to second on a wild pitch but Coastal would leave the runner on base.

In the top of the third, Abbey Montoya singled to left field before advancing to second base on a Zana ground out. Iyanla De Jesus sent a ground-rule RBI double to center field to bring home Montoya and make the score 3-0.

Louisiana would once again use a four-run inning, this time in the bottom of the third to push past the Chanticleers and make the score 4-3. The Cajuns' would tack on one run in each of the final three innings to increase their lead to 7-3.

In the circle, Kaitlin Beasley-Polko (10-8) suffered the loss, while also throwing her sixth complete game of the season.
