DOVER, Del. – The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team remained unbeaten against Delaware State with a 20-3 win early Saturday morning in Dover, Del. With the win, the Chanticleers improved to 5-6 on the season and evened their ASUN record at 1-1, while the Hornets dropped to 1-10 on the year and 0-2 in conference action.
For the contest, Coastal had 14 players record one goal, while five Chants found the back of the net multiple times. Attacker
Kayla Downey tallied the hat-trick with three goals and one assist, while
Avery Snyder,
Lauren Cremen,
Riley Glackin, and
Sydney Tornetta scored two goals each.
Megan Bozzi,
Abi George,
Hannah Close,
Avery McIlwaine,
Brigid Cardillo,
Bethany Bruck,
Monica Manley,
Hannah Demis, and
Layla Morris all tallied one goal for CCU. Delaware State's Rosella Nardi, Saniya Craft, and Nahkaleigh Hayes-Jones each found the back of the net for the home team.
Defensively, Coastal's two goalkeepers
Claire Martell and
Kennedy Manning combined to stop seven shots to the five for Yeda Couto-Eric and Moe Brown for Delaware State.
Coastal jumped on top early as Close started the scoring with 12:30 remaining in the first quarter before Downey followed by back-to-back goals over the next 2:20 for the 3-0 lead. The Chanticleers continued the opening-scoring surge with five goals for an 8-0 advantage after the first 15 minutes of action.
The visitors from Conway, S.C. continued the scoring in the second period with two goals as Downey recorded her hat-trick with the first goal of the second period. Cremen followed with her first tally of the day as Downey hit the 100-career point milestone with the assist to start the running clock with a 10-0 Chanticleer lead. DSU's Hayes-Jones stopped the 10-0 run, along with the game clock, with a little over 11 minutes left until the intermission. Coastal closed the first-half action with three goals to spark a 9-0 run that carried over into the final quarter.
The Chanticleers recorded six goals in the third quarter to take a 19-1 lead as Cremen, Snyder, and Tornetta each recorded their second goal of the day. CCU's Cardillo filled the back of the net for her first career goal for the Chants, followed by Bruck's lone tally with 3:53 remaining in the third period.
In the fourth and final period, the two teams played even as both teams recorded two goals. Coastal began the scoring in the final period as Morris notched her score from the third assist of the day from
Sydney Fox with just under nine minutes left to play for the 19-1 Coastal lead. The Hornets answered 2:50 later to cut the visitor's lead to 19-2. With 2:16 left to play in regulation, Glackin pushed the lead to 20-2 before Delaware State's Nardi closed out the scoring with 1:38 remaining on the running clock for the final tally of 20-3.
The Chanticleers doubled up the Hornets' shots at 30-15, while defensively CCU caused 11 turnovers compared to just nine for DSU.
Coastal will return to action against the No. 22 nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays on Sunday, April 10 in Baltimore, Md. The opening draw is scheduled for noon ET.
