CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team rebounded for a 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-16, 25-15) win over Incarnate Word (UIW) on the second day of the CofC Invitational early Saturday morning in Charleston, S.C. With the win, the Chanticleers improved to 5-3 on the year while the Cardinals fell to 1-5 with the loss.
Coastal's offense was led by
Paulina Perez Rosas with 11 kills, while setter
Brigitta Petrenko finished with 29 assists in the match.
Christina Nance and
Alicia Salgado added nine and five kills, respectively, for the Chants.
Defensively, the Chanticleers totaled 15 blocks as a team. Perez Rosas and Nance finished with six blocks apiece, while
Valentina Varani added five blocks for CCU. Defensive specialist
Lina Perugini finished with 14 digs and
Agata Lesiak was able to dig 12 shots.
In the opening set, Coastal Carolina jumped out to a 3-0 advantage as Nance and
Lauren Malone put down kills before UIW rebounded to push ahead at 5-3 on a spike and CCU miscues. Coastal evened the match up at 6-6 on a pair of kills by Nance and
Rebeka Fucka. The two teams traded points before the Chants used a 3-0 run as a pair of Cardinals' miscues sandwiched a Fucka spike to put CCU up 11-8.
UIW pulled to within two at 13-11 on a kill by Allison Palmi just before Coastal went on a 5-0 run highlighted by two kills each by Malone and Lesiak forcing the Cardinals to take both of their timeouts. After the second timeout, UIW used a 3-0 run to pull within three at 18-15 before CCU pulled away with its second 5-0 run sparked by a miscue by the Cardinals and capped with a Perez Rosas spike for the 22-15 Coastal lead. The Chants picked up the 25-16 set one win with a closing 3-0 run ended by a kill by Perez Rosas.
In the second set, CCU took an early 2-0 lead on a pair of UIW miscues before the two teams traded points as the Chants' Nance tallied a pair of kills to push Coastal on top at 5-3. The Chanticleers took a three-point advantage at 8-5 before the Cardinals used a 9-1 run to fly out to a 14-9 lead. CCU battled back with a 6-0 spurt to retake a 15-14 lead sparked by a Lesiak spike and capped off with a pair of UIW miscues. Both squads traded a pair of 4-1 runs giving the Chants a slight 20-19 advantage in the second set before the Cardinals got the 25-21 win with a 6-1 run to finish the frame and tie the match up at 1-1.
UIW opened the third set with a quick pair of points for the 2-0 lead before the Chants fought back as Perez Rosas put down three kills along with a spike by Nance to go up 4-3. The Cardinals used a 3-0 run on a pair of kills and a service ace for the 6-3 advantage early in the third set. However, CCU battled back to even it up at 6-6 on a Nance kill and a UIW miscue before the Cardinals got a second 3-0 run to pull out to a 9-6 lead.
Coastal answered with a 9-2 run to take a three-point advantage at 15-11 sparked by a UIW miscue and capped by a block assist by Nance and Salgodo. The Cardinals outscored CCU 5-3 to pull within two points before the Chants closed out the third set on UIW mistakes and a pair of service aces by Lesiak for the 25-16 win and a 2-1 match advantage.
The Chanticleers opened the fourth set with a 7-0 run as Petrenko picked up a pair of service aces while Nance added a pair of kills. UIW answered with a 6-1 run to pull within two before Coastal used an 11-1 run highlighted by a Nance spike mixed with a kill and another pair of service aces by Lesiak, and capped by a Perez Rosas' kill. With the fourth set in control, the two teams traded points for the final margin of 25-15, giving the Chanticleers the 3-1 match win.
Coastal Carolina will return to action in the CofC Invitational at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday evening against the host College of Charleston.
