Cooper finishes second in individual scoring

INDEPENDENCE, Minn. – The Coastal Carolina University men's golf team finished the Gopher Invitational tied for 11th overall after shooting a one-under 283 in Monday's final round. CCU's final three-day total at the Windsong Farm Golf Club was a one-under 851 (287-281-283).

Garrett Cooper finished the event in second place after firing a career-best nine-under 204 (68-66-70). He shot under-par all three rounds of the tournament, including a career-best 66 in the second round. The second-place finish was also a career-best finish.

Seth Taylor finished the event tied for 44th with a two-over 215 (76-71-68). Owen Kim was only three strokes back and tied for 59th with a five-over 218 (70-73-75). Tyler Gray finished tied for 69th at seven over 220 (76-71-73), while Connor Newton finished tied for 72nd with a nine-over 222 (73-77-72).

"Garrett had an awesome week and finish at the Gopher," head coach Jacob Wilner said. "Now it's time to get back to the beach and prep for our next event. We are going to keep working hard and with that will come better team results."

Sun Belt member Georgia Southern won the 15-team championship after shooting a 20-under 832. The Eagles entered the final round in fourth place but made their move with a nine-under score in today's action.

Kansas and Kent State were tied for second, each finishing at 15-under 837, while Michigan State and host Minnesota finished tied for fourth at 11-under 841.

Baylor and Furman were tied for sixth at 10-under 842, with Rutgers (-9, 843), Notre Dame (-3, 849), and Yale (-2, 850) finishing just in front of CCU and Toledo, who tied at one-under 851.

Arkansas State (E, 852), West Virginia (+8, 860), and Iowa State (+13, 865) finished out the field.

The Chants will be back in action Sept. 26-27 at the J.T. Poston Invitational hosted by Western Carolina University at the Country Club of Sapphire in Sapphire, N.C.
