Women's Soccer Falls to Georgia State

Chants face Louisiana on Oct. 2

CONWAY, S.C. – In what was a physical match at the CCU Soccer Stadium, the Coastal Carolina women's soccer team fell at home to Georgia State, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon in a Sun Belt Conference matchup.

With the loss, the Chanticleers drop to 1-7-2 overall and 0-3-0 in SBC play. The Panthers improve to 5-1-5 overall and 1-0-2 in league action with the victory.

Georgia State took an early 1-0 lead 20 minutes into the contest when Alondra Nieves found the back of the net off a pass from teammate Elena Diaz.

With a little over a minute to play in the first half, GSU's Bree Barley went one-on-one with Coastal goalkeeper Hope Morrow in the box. Morrow attempted to kick the ball out, but Barley was able to win the challenge, and from the ground trickled in her shot to put Georgia State up 2-0 in the 44th minute.

Following the halftime break, GSU added its third and final goal of the match on a set piece goal that found the foot of Maddie Johnston to put the visitors up 3-0.

Coastal's Megan Brouse tacked on her team-leading sixth goal of the season as the Phoenix, Ariz., native connected on a cross from teammate Rocio Fernandez in the 56th minute to make the score 3-1. Notably, Fernandez's assist came less than a minute after the Madrid, Spain, native subbed into the contest.

Over the 90-minute match, both teams attempted just seven shots, with GSU (six SOG) recording a 6-3 advance in the first half before CCU (3 SOG) tallied a 4-1 shot edge in the second half.

The Chanticleers will start the month of October on the road as CCU is set to face Louisiana on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 1 p.m. ET before a quick turn-around that will see the Chants host conference newcomer Southern Miss on Thursday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. ET.
