Men's Golf Picks Up Win at J.T. Poston Invitational

Three Chants finish among the top three
SAPPHIRE, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina University men's golf team picked up a team win at the J.T. Poston Invitational by posting a one-under 851 (284-280-287) at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley.
The Chants held the lead throughout the final two rounds of the event, but it was the back nine play of first-year Chanticleer Owen Kim that provided the two-stroke margin of victory over host Western Carolina. After shooting a 39 on the front nine, Kim provided the Chants with three birdies on the back nine to help the team hold on for the two-stroke victory.
The Chants had three players finish among the top three, led by Seth Taylor, who finished second with a two-under 211 (69-69-73). Tyler Gray (70-68-74) and Connor Newton (74-69-69) finished in a tie for third after carding a one-under 212.
Trey Crenshaw finished tied for 14th after shooting a two-over 215 (73-72-70), while Garrett Cooper placed in a tied for 19th with a three-over 216 (72-71-73). Kim finished tied for 50th with his 10-over 223 (77-75-71).
The win was the Chanticleers' first team victory since the ECU Intercollegiate back in 2021. It was also the first team win for first-year head coach and CCU alum Jacob Wilner. "I am so happy for our guys," Wilner said. "They fought hard all week and played with confidence."
Wilner, who came to CCU from Nevada, picked up his 10th career win as a head coach. "I have been fortunate to be with some teams that have won college events, and to get my overall 10th career win at Coastal Carolina is pretty special."
CCU's one-under 851 was two strokes better than Western Carolina, who finished one-over 853. Chattanooga (+4, 856), Elon (+5, 857), and UNCW (+9, 861) rounded out the top-five on the leaderboard.
Sun Belt member Georgia State finished sixth with an 18-over 870, followed by High Point (+22, 874), Wofford (+23, 875), James Madison (+25, 877), and Abilene Christian (+27, 879) rounding out the top-10.
The rest of the field included Western Kentucky (+28, 880), while Francis Marion (+32, 884), Kennesaw State (+32, 884), and Appalachian State (+32, 884) tied for 12th. Belmont (+37, 889) was 15th, while Morehead State (+50, 902) and Bellarmine (+50, 902) finished tied for 16th.
Next up for the Chants will be the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, scheduled for Oct. 9-11 at the Blackthorn Club at the Ridges in Jonesborough, Tenn.
