Chants Drop Road Contest at Marshall

Four Chants reached double-digits in the loss

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Coastal Carolina University had four players reach double figures in scoring, but it was not enough in an 81-66 loss at Marshall University on Saturday afternoon at the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington, W.Va.

Antonio Daye, who was injured in Thursday's game at Appalachian State, and was a game-time decision for Saturday's contest, led the foursome with 15 points. Linton Brown came off the bench and scored 11 points, with nine of those points coming on three-point field goals.

Essam Mostafa and Jomaru Brown added 10 points each in the loss.

CCU (7-8, 1-3 Sun Belt) only shot 37.1 percent from the field but did hit 10 three-point field goals in the game. Henry Abraham and Linton Brown led the way with three long-range field goals each.

Marshall's (13-4, 2-2 Sun Belt) Taevion Kinsey entered the game as the leading scorer in the Sun Belt and finished with a game-high 27 points. The Thundering Herd's 7'1" freshman center Micah Handlogten finished with 20 points and a game-high 19 rebounds, while Andrew Taylor added 17 points.

The much-taller Thundering Herd featured six players 6'8" or taller, including two players at 7'1". With that length, Marshall easily outrebounded CCU 53-38, with 20 of those boards coming on the offensive end. Those offensive rebounds led to 19 second-chance points.

Marshall shot 41.8 percent from the field and hit seven of their 28 three-point attempts. They also hit 16-of-28 shots at the free throw line.

CCU only trailed 38-31 at the halftime break as Abraham had nine of his points in the first half, while Mostafa and Josh Uduje scored eight points each in the first 20 minutes of play.

Marshall was led by Kinsey's 16 points and Handlogten's 12 points in the first half.

The Chanticleers still have two games left on the current season-long, four-game road trip, as they will travel to Old Dominion on Thursday, Jan. 12, for a 7 p.m. ET tip. The Chants will then travel to Georgia State on Saturday, Jan. 14, for a scheduled game at 2 p.m. ET.
