Chants Fall to Arkansas State on Senior Day

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team was defeated by the Arkansas State Red Wolves 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at the CCU Soccer Stadium.

With the loss, the Chants fall to 3-7-1, 0-3-1 Sun Belt, and Arkansas State advance to 3-5-2, 1-2-1 Sun Belt.

The Red Wolves had the first goal-scoring attempt of the match in the 5th minute when Emma Riley passed the ball to Pheobe Harpole, who drilled the ball up the middle but it was saved by Coastal keeper Vivienne Carr to keep the score at 0-0.

The Chants scored the first goal of the match in the 12th minute when Julia Ziegenfuss drove down the right side line and crossed the ball to Rami Rapp, who flicked the ball onto Lou Martinet, who then belted the ball into the bottom left corner from the six-yard box to put CCU up 1-0.

Just two more shots were taken in the remainder of the half, both of which came off freshman Emily Petring's boot in the 35th and 42nd minute but they were fired off frame to hold the score at 1-0.

At halftime, CCU led 3-1 in shots and were out fouled 7-4.

The Chants looked to extend their lead in the first minute of the second frame when Cami Wiles pinged the ball to Ziegenfuss in the six-yard box, but it was greeted by a close-range save from the Red Wolves' keeper.

Arkansas State then attempted to level the score in the 47th minute when Darby Stotts slotted the ball to Nicoline Hansen, who netted the second goal of the match, but it was overturned due to an offside call to keep the score at 1-0.

The Red Wolves equalized in the 50th minute when Keelyn Peacock found the back of the net off an assist from Mckenzie Robinson to level the score at 1-1.

Arkansas State pushed ahead in the 62nd minute when Stotts fired the ball into the bottom left corner off an assist from Summit Dann and Hansen to make the score 2-1.

Petring tried to tie up the game in the 80th minute when she got tangled with the Red Wolves keeper at the edge of the box. She scrambled to her feet but wasn't able to put the ball on target in the abandoned net so the score remained at 2-1.

CCU had the last chance of the match in the 84th minute when Petring fed the ball to Martinet, who laced the ball on goal but it was met by the hands of the Red Wolves' keeper to give Arkansas State the 2-1 victory.

At the end of the match, Taylor Tolson, Lou Martinet, Rose Behrmann, Asha McClurg, Jordyn Smith, Talana Banks, Rocio Fernandez, Victoria Kyriakopoulos, Raegan Meyer, Casey O'Connor, and Ella Schad were all honored for senior day.

The Chanticleers will be back in action on the road for a midweek matchup versus Texas State on Oct. 5 at 8 p.m. ET.
