Chants Fight Back to a Tie Versus Troy

TROY, Ala. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team fought back from a 2-1 deficit in the 87th minute to secure a 2-2 draw versus the Troy Trojans on Saturday night.

With the tie, the Chants move to 3-9-2, 0-5-2 Sun Belt, while the Trojans sit on a 5-8-2, 0-5-2 Sun Belt record.

The Trojans looked to attack from the first kick when Hallie Field put the first shot on goal in the opening minute of the match but it was greeted by the safe hands of Vivienne Carr to keep the score at 0-0.

The Chanticleers looked to get on the scoreboard in the 11th minute when back-to-back shots from Tamlyn Parkes and Lou Martinet were dealt with swiftly by the Troy defense to keep the Chants at bay.

Over the next 34 minutes, Troy outshot Coastal 5-0 with two shots hitting the mark but Carr made a pair of routine saves to hold the score at 0-0.

At the end of the first frame, Troy led the Chants 7-2 in shots and 6-0 in corner kicks.

The Chants had a promising attempt in the 58th minute when Katie Riccardi fed the ball to Martinet who pulled her shot just wide to keep the score at 0-0.

Coastal was first to get on the scoreboard in the 63rd minute when Parkes drove down the sideline and pinged the ball to Julia Ziegenfuss. The sophomore from Jupiter, Fla., then smashed in her first goal of the season to put the Chants up 1-0.

The Trojans responded just three minutes later when Carley White looped the ball into the box and Gabrielle Chartier volleyed the ball past Carr to level the score at 1-1.

Troy extended its lead in the 69th minute off a corner set play. Danielle Trovato crossed the ball into the back post from the corner spot to meet the head of Delaney Wells who found the back of the net to make the score 2-1.

With just three minutes left on the clock, the Chants followed in the footsteps of the Trojans and earned a corner kick. Rocio Fernandez then lobbed the ball into the box to find the boot of Maggie Mace who equalized the score at 2-2.

The Chants had one final attempt in the 88th minute but Martinet's shot was saved by the Troy keeper to close out the match with a 2-2 draw.

The Chanticleers will return to the CCU Soccer Stadium on Oct. 19 to take on South Alabama at 7 p.m. ET.
