CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team swept the James Madison Dukes to pick up its ninth consecutive win with a 3-0 (27-25, 25-21, 25-20) victory on Friday evening in Conway, S.C., to remain unbeaten in Sun Belt Conference play. With the win, the Chanticleers move to 14-7 overall and 9-0 in SBC play while the Dukes drop to 15-5 on the year and 8-1 in conference action.
CCU's
Jasmine Rivest led the offense with a match-high 17 kills with
Agata Lesiak and
Jalyn Stout finishing with eight kills each. Stout tallied a team-high 19 assists, while
Cagla Bengi added 15 assists to spark the offense.
Defensively,
Valentina Varani paced the defense with a match-high seven blocks while Stout added five stops at the net. Libero
Sydney Lewis tallied a match-high 17 digs, while Stout tallied her seventh double-double to go with her NCAA-leading seven triple-doubles and Rivest recorded her 10th double-double with 14 and 11 digs, respectively.
James Madison was led by Sophie Davis with a team-high 13 kills, while Elizabeth Helmich added eight kills. Caroline Dozier had a match-high 22 assists. Davis led the defense with four blocks while Mitte Velman and Madilyn O'Toole tallied 12 and 11 digs, respectively.
In the opening set, JMU jumped to a 8-2 lead before the Chanticleers settled into their game. After the two teams traded the next seven rallies Coastal trailed 12-5, before a Duke miscue sparked a 5-0 run that included a pair of kills by Rivest and Stout along with a service ace by
Cagla Bengi to cut the deficit to 12-10.
However, James Madison used a 3-1 run to take a 15-11 advantage at the media timeout only to see the Chants use a 9-1 burst that included three spikes by
Lauren Malone and the first timeout of the set by JMU to take a 20-16 lead. The Dukes evened the set at 20-20 with a 4-0 spurt that forced CCU to call its first timeout.
The Chanticleers took a 24-22 lead with a 4-2 run only to see the visitors respond with two quick kills that forced the Chants to call their final timeout of the set with the score tied at 24-24. Coastal claimed the opening set at 27-25 with a 3-1 run that included a pair of CCU spikes and a block assist by Rivest and Varani.
With the Chanticleers holding a 1-0 match advantage, Coastal raced to a 5-1 second set lead, highlighted by the duo of Stout and
Dilara Unal teaming up to knock down a pair of JMU kill attempts that forced the Dukes to call an early timeout. James Madison cut the CCU lead to 6-5 with a 4-1 run just to see the Chants take a 12-7 lead with a 6-2 burst, that included a pair of stops by Varani in the middle of the net and forcing the Dukes to call their final timeout of the second set.
After the break in action, James Madison responded with a 3-0 spurt to trail 12-10 just to see Coastal increase its lead to 14-10 as Varani and Stout teamed up for another block. However, JMU would cut the deficit to 16-14 with a 4-2 run just before CCU answered with a 4-1 surge for a 20-15 advantage, highlighted by three kills by Rivest.
James Madison responded with a 3-0 burst to trail 20-18 and force the Chanticleers to call their first timeout of the second set. The two squads traded the next six rallies with Coastal maintaining its lead at 23-21 before Stout gave the Chants a 2-0 match lead with a kill and service ace for the 25-21 second-set win.
In the third and final set, the Dukes looked to gain some traction with a 7-1 surge that forced the Chanticleers to call their first timeout of the set. After the break, JMU increased its lead to 12-3 before Rivest put down three kills to spark a 7-1 run that was capped by a Varani block that included the first timeout by the Dukes.
After two quick points by James Madison, Coastal trailed 15-10 before an 8-1 burst gave Coastal the 18-16 lead, highlighted by
Alicja Jaryszek coming off the bench for a pair of kills and force the JMU to call its final timeout of the set. The Dukes stopped the Coastal momentum swing only to see the Ladies in Teal grasp it back with a 6-2 run for the 24-18 advantage, sparked by a kill by Stout and topped by the 16th kill by Rivest. James Madison answered with two quick points just before Rivest ended the match at 25-20 for the third-set victory and the 3-0 sweep.
Coastal Carolina will return the HTC Center in Conway, S.C., for its next matchup versus the James Madison Dukes on Saturday, October 21. The opening serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
