Coastal Carolina Claims Top Spot in East Division with 3-2 win Over Dukes

Volleyball wins 10th consecutive match in Sun Belt Conference play

CONWAY, S.C. – Jasmine Rivest led the Coastal Carolina volleyball team to a 3-2 (20-25, 25-29, 26-24, 25-27, 15-8) win over the James Madison Dukes on Saturday afternoon at the HTC Center to remain unbeaten in Sun Belt Conference play and is its 10th-consecutive victory. With the win, the Chanticleers move to 15-7 overall and 10-0 in SBC play while the Dukes drop to 15-6 on the year and 8-2 in conference action.
 
CCU's Rivest led the offense with a team-high 21 kills while Jalyn Stout finished with 11 kills. Agata Lesiak and Lauren Malone added eight and seven kills, respectively. Stout tallied a team-high 25 assists with Cagla Bengi adding 24 assists to spark the offense.
 
Defensively, Valentina Varani paced the defense with a team-high seven blocks while Rivest and Dilara Unal added four stops each at the net. Libero Sydney Lewis tallied a team-high 20 digs, while Stout tallied her NCAA-leading eighth triple-double and Rivest recorded her 11th double-double with 12 and 15 digs, respectively.
 
James Madison was led by Sophie Davis with a match-high 22 kills, while Mitte Veldman (20), Bre Reid (14), and Elizabeth Helmich (10) added double digit kills. Rebecca Watkins had a match-high 37 assists with Caroline Dozier adding 23 helpers. Davis led the defense with eight blocks while Jaydyn Clemmer, Madilyn O'Toole, and Veldman tallied 24, 17 and 15 digs, respectively.
 
In the opening set, Coastal Carolina held a 4-3 lead after the first seven rallies, highlighted by a pair of kills by Malone just before the Dukes used a 3-0 run to take a 6-4 advantage. The Chants responded with a 5-1 spurt that included a service ace by Unal and a pair of kills by Rivest to lead 9-7.
 
However, James Madison retook the lead at 11-10 with a 4-1 surge just to see CCU answer with a 5-2 run to retake the lead at 15-13 sparked by a kill by Rivest and capped by a kill by Stout. After the media break, JMU pushed in front with a 4-0 burst to lead 17-15. The Chanticleers forced a pair of mistakes by the Dukes to even the set at 17-17. James Madison claimed the opening set with an 8-3 run for the 25-20 win.
 
The two teams opened the second set by trading the first eight rallies to remain even at 4-4 before the Chants opened a four-point advantage at 9-5 with a 4-0 run that included kills by Lesiak and Varani. After two quick points by the Dukes, Coastal increased its lead to 15-7 with a 6-0 burst, highlighted by a pair of block assists by Rivest and Varani.
 
Coastal held a 20-13 advantage after the two squads traded the next 11 points only to see JMU cut the deficit to 20-16 with a 3-0 spurt. After the break, the two teams swapped the next four rallies and CCU holding a 22-18 lead. The Chanticleers evened the set at 1-1 with a 3-1 run for the 25-19 second set win, ignited by a James Madison service error and capped by a spike by Stout.
 
In the third set, Coastal opened with a 9-5 advantage, sparked by a Stout kill and capped by a Rivest stop at the net. However, the Dukes sandwiched a Chanticleer 3-0 run with a pair of 3-0 surges to trail 13-12. CCU increased its lead to 17-14 with a 4-2 spurt that included kills in the middle by Varani and Unal.
 
The visitors from James Madison responded with 6-2 burst to take a 20-19 lead just to see the Chants answer with two quick points on a kill by Rivest and a block assist by Varani and Stout for a 21-20 advantage. A quick 3-0 run by the Dukes was quickly answered by the Ladies in Teal with a 5-1 surge to claim a 26-24 third-set win, highlighted by block by Stout.
 
JMU opened the fourth set with an 11-3 before Coastal Carolina settled into the set by trading the next eight rallies to trail 15-7 at the media timeout. After the break in action, the Chanticleers used a 9-4 surge to trail 19-16, highlighted by a pair of kills by Rivest and Malone.
 
After trading the next nine rallies Coastal trailed 23-19 just before using a 6-2 run to even the set at 25-25, ignited by a Stout spike and topped off by a Rivest kill. However, the Dukes answered with the final two points to even the match at 2-2 with the 27-25 fourth-set win.
 
In the fifth and final set, Coastal Carolina raced out to a 5-2 lead, highlighted by a pair of kills by Rivest and a Bengi service ace that forced the Dukes to call the early timeout. After the break, CCU used a 4-1 burst to force JMU to call their final timeout of the match that included a service ace by Rivest.
 
The Chanticleers increased their lead to 13-5 with a 4-2 spurt, sparked by a kill by Stout and capped by a kill in the middle by Unal. James Madison responded with a quick two points to trail 13-7 only to see Lesiak and Rivest sandwich a JMU spike with kills of their own for the final 15-8 fifth-set win and 3-2 match win.
 
Coastal Carolina will return to the road for its next matchup versus the Marshall Thundering Herd in Huntington, W.Va., on Friday and Saturday, October 27-28. The opening serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET on Friday and 1 p.m. ET on Oct. 28.
