HUNTINGTON, WV. – Jasmine Rivest led the Coastal Carolina volleyball team to its 11th-consecutive victory with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-23) win over the Marshall Thundering Herd on Friday evening in Huntington, W.V. With the win, the Chanticleers move to 16-7 overall and 11-0 in SBC play while the Herd drop to 12-13 on the year and 4-7 in conference action.
CCU's Rivest led an offense that had a .335 hitting percentage with a match-high 25 kills while
Agata Lesiak added 18 kills.
Jalyn Stout and
Lauren Malone added 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Stout tallied a team-high 31 assists with
Cagla Bengi adding 29 assists to spark the offense.
Defensively,
Valentina Varani paced the defense with a team-high four blocks while Rivest and Lesiak added two stops each at the net. Libero
Sydney Lewis tallied a match-high 15 digs, while Rivest recorded her 12th double-double with 14 digs.
Marshall was led by Kylee Stokes with a team-high 13 kills, while Essence Clerkley (11) and Lydia Montague (10) added double-digit kills. Brynn Brown had a match-high 44 assists. Stokes, Clerkley, and Montague led the defense with two blocks each while Brown and Jazminn Parrish tallied 14 and 12 digs, respectively.
In the opening set, Coastal Carolina held a 5-2 lead after the first seven rallies, highlighted by five kills by Rivest. The two teams traded the next five points with the Thundering Herd trailing 7-5. The Chants responded with a 5-3 spurt that included kills by Rivest, Malone, and Varani to lead 12-8.
However, Marshall evened the match at 13-13 with a 5-1 run only to see the Chanticleers to take a 15-14 advantage at the media break on a pair of kills by Stout. After the break in action, the Herd took a 20-18 with a 6-3 burst just before Coastal Carolina pushed back in front at 22-20 with a 4-0 surge on kills by Stout, Rivest, and Lesiak. The Thundering Herd rebounded with a 5-1 run for the set one win at 25-23.
The second set saw the Herd take a 6-3 lead before the Chants take a 10-8 advantage with a 7-2 surge, led by three kills by Malone. Marshall evened the set at 10-10 with two quick points just to see CCU use a 6-2 run to lead 16-12, ignited by a Rivest spike and capped off by a Rivest kill.
The two squads traded the next nine rallies with Coastal holding a 20-17 advantage. The Chanticleers increased their lead to 21-17 on kills by Lesiak and Rivest just before closing out the second set by outscoring the Herd 3-2 for the 25-19 second set win to even the match at 1-1.
In the third set, Marshall jumped to the quick 2-0 lead before Coastal Carolina outscored the hosts 4-2 for a 4-4 tie, sparked by a kill by Varani and topped off by a spike by Lesiak. After a quick Marshall score, the Ladies in Teal forced the Thundering Herd to call both their timeouts in a 12-1 run that included four kills by Lesiak for a 16-6 lead.
Coastal Carolina and Marshall traded the next eight points with the Chanticleers maintaining a 10-point lead at 20-10. After two quick points by the Herd, CCU responded with a pair of kills by Lesiak to lead 22-12. However, Marshall used a 3-1 run to trail 23-15 just to see the Chants take a 2-1 match lead with the 25-15 third set win on back-to-back kills by Stout.
In the fourth and final set, the Chanticleers raced to an 8-4 advantage, highlighted on a pair of kills by Malone and Rivest. Marshall doubled up Coastal at 4-2 to trail 10-8 just to see the Chants use a 5-2 burst for a 15-12 lead that included two kills by Malone. After the media timeout, the Herd used an 8-2 surge to take an 18-17 advantage.
The two teams traded the next four rallies with Marshall holding a 20-19 lead only to see Coastal Carolina retake the lead at 23-21 with a 4-1 run that included a service ace by
Bailee Earnhardt. Coastal's Rivest put down two kills for the final 25-23 fourth set and 3-1 match win for the Chanticleers.
Coastal Carolina will face Marshall again on Saturday, October 28, in Huntington. The opening serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
