HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team fell to the Marshall Thundering Herd 1-0 in Huntington, W.Va., on Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, the Chants fall to 3-11-2, 0-7-2 Sun Belt, while Marshall improves to 7-8-1, 2-7-0 Sun Belt.
Bailey Fisher had the first goal-scoring attempt in the 13th minute when she fired a shot past Coastal keeper Hope Morrow but Sarah Soraghan cleared the ball off the goal line to hold the score at 0-0.
The Chants looked to counterattack in the 30th minute when Rocio Fernandez drove down the sideline and squared the ball to Rami Rapp. Rapp then passed the ball to Casey O'Connor but she pulled her shot wide.
CCU had an opportunity to take the lead in the 42nd minute when Rapp drilled the ball on goal but Marshall's keeper Ashlyn Drayer knocked the ball away to deny the Chants. The rebounded shot fell at Rapp's feet for a second time but her shot was blocked to end the half at 0-0.
The Chants led 4-3 in shots and 3-1 in corner kicks in the opening frame while the Thundering Herd led 5-4 in fouls.
Coastal took back-to-back shots off the boots of Katie Riccardi and Tamlyn Parkes in the 61st minute but both attempts were dealt with swiftly by the Thundering Herd defense.
The CCU offense continued to put pressure on Thundering Herd in the 65th minute when Julia Ziegenfuss laced the ball from the edge of the area but Drayer made her second save of the match to keep the score at 0-0.
Just five minutes later, Lou Martinet smashed the ball on frame but Drayer palmed the ball off the crossbar to keep the Chants at bay.
The Thundering Herd took the lead in the 80th minute when Soraghan took down Fisher in the box to give Marshall a penalty kick. Fisher then buried the ball into the top right corner from the penalty spot to put the Thundering Herd up 1-0.
The Chants tried to equalize the match in the 89th minute when they were awarded a free kick just outside the box. Martinet then looped the ball over the wall but Drayer was able to take care of the danger to give Marshall the 1-0 win.
The Chanticleers will conclude their season versus James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va., on Oct. 26. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. ET.
