HUNTINGTON, WV. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team won its 12th consecutive match with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-23) sweep over the Marshall Thundering Herd on Saturday afternoon in Huntington, W.V. With the win, the Chanticleers move to 16-7 overall and 12-0 in SBC play while the Herd drop to 12-14 on the year and 4-8 in conference action.
CCU's
Jasmine Rivest led the offense with a team-high 13 kills while
Jalyn Stout and
Lauren Malone added nine kills each.
Cagla Bengi totaled a match-high 24 assists to spark the offense with Stout adding 13 helpers.
Defensively,
Dilara Unal paced the defense with a match-high four blocks with Lesiak adding two stops each at the net. Libero
Sydney Lewis tallied a match-high 15 digs, while Rivest recorded her 12th double-double with 14 digs.
Marshall was led by Lydia Montague with a match-high 14 kills, while Essence Clerkley added seven kills. Brynn Brown had a team-high 21 assists. Clerkley and Montague led the defense with two blocks each while Neal Peyton tallied 15 digs.
In the opening set, Coastal Carolina set the tone early with a 9-0 run that included five mistakes by the Thundering Herd. After a quick put down by Montague, the Chanticleers responded with 4-1 spurt to take a 13-2 lead highlighted by kills by Malone and Rivest.
Marshall answered with a 4-0 burst to trail 13-6 just to see the Chants increase their lead to 16-6 with a 3-0 run that included kills by Rivest and Lesiak. After trading the next 13 rallies, Coastal maintained a 22-13 advantage. The Chanticleers took a 1-0 match lead with a 3-1 surge, ignited by a Unal kill and capped by a Lesiak spike.
In the second set, the two teams traded the first 18 points with the score even at 9-9 before Coastal opened a two-score advantage at 11-9 that included a kill by Stout. The Herd responded with two quick scores to even the set at 11-11 only to see CCU jump back in front 13-11 that included a service ace by Stout.
The Thundering Herd used a 4-1 spurt to take a 15-14 lead at the media timeout, only to see the Chanticleers retake the lead at 22-17 with an 8-2 burst, highlighted by a pair of kills by Rivest. The two teams traded the final six points with Coastal Carolina claiming a 25-20 second set win to lead the match 2-0.
In the third and final set, the Ladies in Teal doubled up Marshall to lead 8-4 that included two kills each by Rivest and Malone. The Herd battled back to trail 8-7 with a 3-0 spurt before the two squads traded the next four points with Coastal leading 10-9. The Chanticleers outscored Marshall 5-1, highlighted by two kills by Stout for the media timeout of the set.
Marshall forced the Chants to call their first timeout with a 9-4 surge to even the set at 19-19. After a Rivest kill, the Herd answered with two quick points to lead 21-20. Coastal Carolina's
Alicja Jaryszek comes off the bench with two quick points to kickstart a 5-2 burst for the 25-23 third set win and 3-0 match victory.
Coastal Carolina will return to Conway, S.C., to close out the home portion of its schedule as the Chanticleers will host South Alabama on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3-4. The opening serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET on Friday and 1 p.m. ET on Saturday.
