CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team fell to the Georgia Southern Eagles 2-1 at the CCU Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, the Chants drop to 3-9-1, 0-5-1 Sun Belt, and the Eagles advanced to 7-5, 2-3 Sun Belt.
Georgia Southern looked to take an early lead in the 5th minute when Isabel Kopp squared the ball to Megan Przybysz, who netted the first goal of the match but it was overturned for a foul that was committed moments before to hold the score at 0-0.
The Chants were first to get on the scoreboard in the 22nd minute when Julia Ziegenfuss drove down the right side and crossed the ball into Lou Martinet whose first shot was blocked. The ball then rebounded and fell at her feet for a second time, and she smashed the ball into the left corner to make the score 1-0.
The Eagles answered back immediately in the 23rd minute when Przybysz lobbed the ball into the box from a free kick and it reached Bri Conley, who found the back of the net to equalize the score at 1-1.
Georgia Southern took five more goals in the remainder of the first half while denying the Chants a single shot.
At the end of the first period, the Eagles led 9-3 in shots, 2-1 in corner kicks, and 7-6 in fouls.
Both teams remained at a stalemate for the opening 20 minutes of the second period with neither managing to take a shot.
Georgia Southern looked to break away in the 66th minute but the CCU defense made two big back-to-back blocks to keep the Eagles at bay and the score at 1-1.
The Eagles pulled ahead in the 71st minute when Kopp crossed the ball to the head of Emma Armstrong, who bumped it down to Simone Timm's feet, and she then drilled the ball into the net to make the score 2-1.
The Chants were unable to take another shot in the final 19 minutes of the match to try and level the score resulting in a 2-1 victory for the Eagles.
The Chanticleers will return to the pitch on Oct. 14 to face the Troy Trojans at 5 p.m. in Troy, Ala.
