WILMINGTON, N.C. – Graduate student
Makaila Cange led the Coastal Carolina women's basketball to a 73-59 road win over regional rival UNC Wilmington at the Trask Coliseum in Wilmington, N.C., on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Chanticleers move to 4-2 on the year, while the Seahawks drop to 1-4 with the loss.
Coastal's Cange tallied 24 points on a perfect afternoon by going 11-of-11 from floor and 2-of-2 from the free-throw line. She was helped by
Arin Freeman with 15 points, while
Alancia Ramsey,
Tiara Abron, and
Dalanna Carter scored nine, eight, and seven points, respectively.
Defensively, CCU forced 36 turnovers, as Abron finished with six steals. Ramsey grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to go with her nine points to help Coastal win the rebound battle 37-32. Freshman center
Riley Stack had five blocks in the middle for the Chants.
UNCW was led by Taylor Henderson with 26 points while Kylah Silver and Britany Range finished with nine and eight points each. Henderson grabbed nine boards with Lexi Jackson making two blocks for the Seahawks.
The opening period began as the two teams traded the first 12 points to remain even at 6-6, as Cange, Carter, and Abron each hit shots in the paint. Coastal took control with six minutes remaining on the clock with a 5-0 run to lead 11-6 that included an old-fashioned three-point play by Cange.
After a basket by Henderson, the Chanticleers increased their lead to 17-8, ignited by a Stack hook shot and capped off by a Cange jumper in the paint. The two teams traded baskets over the final two minutes with Coastal holding a 19-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Coastal used a 12-2 surge to take a 32-12 lead that included five straight points by
Zaria Hurston. UNCW's Henderson and McCall King both went 1-of-2 from the free throw line to cut the deficit to 32-14 before the two teams traded the final two baskets of the quarter with Coastal holding a 34-16 advantage.
The third quarter started with a 9-2 burst by the homestanding Seahawks that saw the Chanticleers call an early timeout. After a Cange layup, UNCW cut the deficit to eight at 38-30 before Coastal used a 6-0 surge to lead 44-30 with 2:27 remaining in the third period.
The Seahawks scored four of the next five points to cut the Coastal lead to 45-35 just to see the Chanticleers increase their lead to 50-35, including a second old-fashioned- three-point play by Cange. The two teams finished the third period at the free throw line as Coastal's Carter was 1-of-2 to give the Chants a 51-37 with 10 minutes remaining to play in regulation.
A 7-2 run by Coastal Carolina increased the lead to 19 at 58-39, that included a pair of layups by Abron sandwiching an
Anaya Barney three-point jump shot. Both teams traded the next 22 points with the Chants maintaining the 19-point advantage at 69-50. However, the Seahawks closed the final 1:24 with a 9-4 run for the final margin of 73-59 for the Chanticleers fourth straight win of the season and fifth consecutive win over UNCW.
Coastal Carolina will remain on the road as the Chanticleers will travel to UNC Greensboro on Wednesday, Nov. 29. The opening tip off is schedule for 7 p.m. ET.
