CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team moved to 4-0 on the spring season with a 6-1 win over Francis Marion in the Chanticleers' home opener on Wednesday afternoon in Conway, S.C.
With the win, CCU not only improved to 4-0 on the spring season but also 4-0 versus in-state foes.
Coastal opened the match with a clean sweep in doubles play, as the team of
Ryuya Ata and
Maj Tomac scored a 6-2 win over Martin Barbera and Austin Vienna at the No. 2 doubles position for the first win of the day.
The duo of
Steve Mundt and
Carlos Berna Ruiz followed with a 6-3 victory at the top flight over Liam Day and Leonel Gonzalez to secure the doubles point before the tandem of
Lucas Wayenburg and
Neil O'Connor finished the sweep with a 6-4 win over Harri Lloyd-Evans and Adam Ernberg at the No. 3 flight.
The Chants continued their winning ways in singles play, as Mundt cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 straight-sets win over Austin Vienna on court No. 6, while Tomac nearly shut out Ernberg with a 6-0, 6-1 win on court No. 5 to push the match lead to 3-0.
Guilherme Toresan sealed the match win for the home squad with a 6-3, 6-0 straight-sets win over Gonzalez on court No. 4.
With the match win in hand, the Chants picked up two more straight-set wins to pull in front at 6-0. Berna Ruiz won 6-4, 6-2 over Day on court No. 1, while Ata followed with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Lloyd-Evans on court No. 2.
FMU avoided the shutout loss with a three-set win on court No. 3 to end the match with the Chants on top 6-1.
The Chanticleers will remain at home to host regional foe UNCW on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 1:30 p.m. ET.
