Men’s Tennis Drops First Match of the Season at Home to UNCW

Men’s Tennis moved to 4-1 on the season with the loss

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's tennis suffered its first loss of the spring season on Tuesday afternoon, as the Chanticleers fell to the UNCW Seahawks 5-2 in non-conference play at the Stevens Tennis Complex in Conway, S.C.

On top of the doubles point, Maj Tomac was the lone Chanticleer to score a win in singles play, winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at the No. 6 position.

The loss drops CCU to 4-1 on the season, while with the win, UNCW improves to 2-1 on the year.

Despite the loss, the Coastal netters are still undefeated versus in-state foes at 4-0.

The Chanticleers opened up the match in a big way, as the duo of Tomac and Ryuya Ata blanked the team of Davide Innocenti and Drew Broadstreet 6-0 at the No. 2 doubles spot for the first result of the day.

The CCU tandem of Lucas Wayenburg and Neil O'Connor followed with a 6-4 win over Gabe Hurtado and Trey Mallory on court No. 3 to pick up the doubles point for the home team and give the Chants an early 1-0 match lead.

However, in singles play the momentum quickly shifted to the visiting Seahawks, as UNCW's Beka Rasamatov won in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 over Carlos Berna Ruiz on court No. 1, while Hurtado followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Wayenburg on court No. 4 to push UNCW in front 2-1 in the match.

UNCW continued its winning ways in singles action with straight-set wins on courts three, five, and two to secure the win.

Down 5-1 in the match, Tomac refused to give in, as he and UNCW's Alex DeGabriele battled to the third set. Tomac won set one 6-3 and bounced back from a second-set 6-3 loss to hold off DeGabriele with a 6-2 third-set win to claim the match victory and put the final score at 5-2.

The Chanticleers will look to bounce back at the College of Charleston on Friday, Feb. 10, at 1 p.m. ET in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
