LAREDO, Texas. – The Coastal Carolina University's men's golf team finished fifth after shooting a three-round score of 17-over 881 (287-294-300) at the Border Olympics, played at the Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas.
The Chants started the final day tied for second after the completion of the first round on Monday afternoon. The second round was suspended due to darkness on Monday evening and was completed Tuesday morning before the start of the third round.
CCU shot a 12-over 300 in Monday's third and final round to finish fifth in the event. It was CCU's second fifth-place finish of the spring after finishing fifth to open the spring season last week at The Hayt.
Seth Taylor had a strong tournament shooting under par in two of the three rounds. He finished the day with an even-par 216 (69-76-71), which had him in a tie for eighth. He played the first nine holes of the third round at one-over before shooting a two-under pace over the final nine holes.
Owen Kim finished tied for 14th after he completed his play with a three-over 219 (76-70-73).
Garrett Cooper carded an eight-over 224 (71-76-77) and finished tied for 35th.
Trey Crenshaw (78-75-79) and
Tyler Gray (71-73-88) each finished with a 16-over 232 and were tied for 68th.
"We are disappointed with our finish, but have to put things in perspective," head coach
Jacob Wilner said. "We finished fifth and are trending in the right direction and once we do the simple stuff better, we will be just fine."
Baylor, who entered the competition ranked 30th in the nation, was the only team to finish under par in the event. The Bears finished with an eight-under 856, 15 strokes ahead of second place, and host, Houston's seven-over 871.
Michigan finished third, just two strokes in front of the Chants with a 15-over 879, while Sun Belt Conference foe ULM finished one shot ahead of the Chants with a 16-over 880.
It was a tight leaderboard in spots 6-10, with Wright State leading that group with a 21-over 885. Louisiana Tech (+24, 888) was seventh, followed by Sam Houston State (+25, 889) and New Mexico State (+28, 892).
Illinois State and Rice rounded out the top 10, each finishing at 29-over 893.
The rest of the field included Lamar (+43, 907) and Bowling Green (+45, 909), with Miami (OH) (+46, 910) and Western Carolina (+46, 910) tied for 14th. UT-Rio Grande Valley (+51, 915) and Houston Christian (+58, 922) completed the field.
The Chants will be back in action on Thursday, March 9, when they host UNCW in a dual match at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
