Men’s Tennis Holds Off Cougars for 4-3 Road Win

Men’s Tennis is now 5-0 versus in-state foes

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team remained undefeated versus in-state foes this season with a 4-3 road win over the College of Charleston in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., on Wednesday afternoon.
 
With the win, CCU moved to 5-1 overall on the spring season and 5-0 versus opponents from the state of South Carolina. The loss dropped the College of Charleston to 1-3 on the year.
 
Coastal again continued its strong doubles play, as the Chanticleers posted wins on courts No. 1 and 2 to win the doubles point and take an early 1-0 match lead.
 
CCU's duo of Ryuya Ata and Maj Tomac moved to 4-0 on the spring season with a 6-2 win over Zac Larke and Johnny Wang on court No. 2.
 
After CofC posted a 6-4 win on court No. 3, the Chanticleers picked up a big win by Carlos Berna Ruiz and Steve Mundt on court No. 1 with a 6-4 victory over Mattia Bernardi and Robby Krick.
 
Berna Ruiz carried over the momentum from doubles play into singles action, as he dominated in a 6-2, 6-0 win on court No. 1 to put the visitors in Teal up 2-0 in the match.
 
Coastal extended its lead to 3-0 shortly after, as Lucas Wayenburg posted a 6-2, 6-3 straight-sets win on court No. 4 over Matias Gaedechens of Charleston.
 
After the home-standing Cougars scored a win at No. 2, Guilherme Toresan sealed the match win for the Chants with a 6-4, 7-5 win on court No. 3.
 
College of Charleston's Jordyn Larke held off CCU's Jesus Garcia, who was seeing his first action of the spring season, in three sets 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 to put the score at 4-2.
 
With the match decided, the Chants' Tomac retired at court No. 5 with his match tied up at one set apiece versus Wang.
 
The Chanticleers will return home to host regional foe Campbell on Friday, Feb. 17, at 1 p.m. ET at the Stevens Tennis Complex.
