CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team fell 13-8 to the Davidson Wildcats at Brooks Stadium on the campus of Coastal Carolina University Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Chanticleers dropped to 1-1 on the young season, while Davidson improved to 2-1 overall with the win.
CCU's offense was paced by
Hope Steuerwald and
Avery McIlwaine as the duo tallied two points each on two goals, while
Kayla Downey added a pair of points with two assists.
Sydney McClure,
Alyson Mascolo,
Abi George, and
Bethany Bruck all found the back of the net for one goal each for the Chants, as
Devin Rybacki led the team by winning five draw controls.
Defensively, Coastal had two goalkeepers share time between the pipes, as
Claire Martell allowed seven goals while facing 16 shots and
Charlotte Sadler gave up six goals on 12 shots. Martell totaled five saves while Sadler finished with four stops. Steuerwald scooped up four groundballs, while Snyder and
Gabrielle Beckett each rounded up three groundballs.
Davidson was led by Julianne Carey and Grace Fahey as the tandem recorded hat tricks, as Carey tallied four goals and one assist for five points on the day, while Fahey filled the back of the net three times and aided on one goal for four points. Carey sparked the offense with nine draw control wins.
The Wildcats' Amanda Monahan allowed eight goals while stopping 10 of CCU's shots to earn the win. Josie Lambert and Alyssa Natoli scooped up three groundballs each to give the Davidson offense the ball.
Coastal opened the first-quarter scoring after McIlwaine scored the first goal, as Downey found the Alpharetta, Ga., native in front of the cress to take a 1-0 lead. The Chants needed almost three minutes to increase their lead 2-0 on the fifth goal of the season by Steuerwald. Davidson answered with the final two goals of the opening period to knot the match up at 2-2.
CCU opened up a two-goal advantage in the second, as Downey hit a wide-open Steuerwald for a score which was followed by Snyder finding George in front of the net for the 4-2 lead with 11:50 left until the halftime break. The Wildcats answered with a 3-0 burst for a 5-4 lead, which they would not relinquish, at the intermission.
The third quarter belonged to the visitors from Davidson, N.C., as Davidson scored four goals to increase its lead to 9-4 with 15 minutes of action remaining in regulation.
Coastal's McClure's free-position goal would cut the Wildcats' lead to four at 9-5. However, Davidson answered with a pair of goals, including a woman-up goal for an 11-5 advantage. The two teams traded the final five goals for the final margin of 13-8.
Coastal Carolina will look to rebound at home, as the Chanticleers will host the Elon Phoenix on Sunday, Feb. 16. The opening draw is scheduled for noon ET.
