PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The Coastal Carolina University's men's golf team finished fifth after shooting a three-round score of nine-over 873 (289-295-289) at The Hayt over Sunday and Monday at the Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
The Chants moved up three spots after shooting a one-over 289 in Monday's action, matching their first-round score from Sunday. CCU added a seven over 295 in Sunday's second round.
Garrett Cooper (71-75-72) and
Owen Kim (77-71-70) were the top finishers for the Chanticleers, both finishing with a two-over 218. Cooper finished his day with four birdies and four bogeys in his even-round score. Kim led the team with five birdies on the day and 15 for the tournament. He finished his final 12 holes in today's action at two-under par. They finished tied for 21st.
Trey Crenshaw finished tied for 25th after finishing with a three-over 219 (70-76-73). He was second on the team with 11 birdies during the two-day event.
Seth Taylor finished tied for 38th as he carded a six over 222 (75-73-74).
Tyler Gray finished tied for 70th after shooting a 16-over 232 (73-76-83).
"It was a good start to our spring," head coach
Jacob Wilner said. "The guys are starting to play with some confidence and making a bunch of birdies. Once we clean up the big numbers, I feel we will be in a great spot."
Vanderbilt, the nation's second-ranked team, won the tournament with a 28-under 836 with host North Florida finishing second, 16 strokes back, with a 12-under 852.
FGCU (+5, 869) finished third with 17th-ranked Alabama finishing fourth (+6, 870), just three strokes ahead of the Chants' nine-over 873 finish.
UCF (+10, 874) was one shot back of the Chants, while Chattanooga (+14, 878) finished seventh. Furman (+17, 881) and Louisiana Tech (+17, 881) finished tied for eighth, while North Texas (+22, 886) and UAB (+22, 886) finished tied for 10th.
The rest of the field included Arkansas (+23, 887), Jacksonville State (+42, 906) and Jacksonville (+49, 913).
The Chants will be back in action on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 13-14 at the Border Olympics hosted by the University of Houston at the Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas.
