Chants Topple Campbell 24-12 on Saturday

Chanticleers’ Downey records sixth hat trick of the season

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Coastal Carolina's Kayla Downey recorded eight points on five goals and three assists as the Chanticleers scored a dominant 24-12 win over the Campbell Fighting Camels on Saturday afternoon in Buies Creek, N.C.

The win pushed Coastal to 6-3 on the season, while the loss dropped the Camels to 4-4.

Downey, the reigning two-time ASUN Offensive Player of the Week, combined for 14 points for her performances versus Marist and Harvard last week.

Behind Downey's five goals and three assists, 13 other Chants notched at least one goal, while nine other players added an assist as the Women in Teal scored 24 goals with the help of 16 assists in the win.

CCU's Alyson Mascolo (4 goals), Bethany Bruck (3 goals), Monica Manley (2 goals, 1 assist), and Brigid Cardillo (2 goals, 1 assist) all had multiple goals in the win. Avery McIlwaine (1 goal, 4 assists) and Sydney McClure (1 goal, 3 assists) joined Downey with multiple assists.

For Campbell, six different players found the back of the net, led by hat tricks by Sam Bischoff (3 goals, 1 assist) and Olivia Ohlmann (3 goals, 1 assist).

Earning the win in goal for the Chants was Claire Martell, as the starting goalie made 11 saves on 28 shot attempts over 60 minutes between the pipes.

The loss fell to the Campbells' starter Natalie Mellen, who allowed nine goals and made three saves in just 30 minutes of action.

Coastal outshot the Fighting Camels 45-28 for the game and dominated in draw controls at 25-14.

Campbell claimed its only lead of the contest as Ohlmann tallied her 10th goal of the season off the assist by Bischoff for the 1-0 advantage with just 1:29 expiring off the game clock.

The Women in Teal answered with a 5-0 run, as Abi George (1 goal) sparked the surge with Avery Snyder (1 goal), Bruck, Gabrielle Beckett (1 goal, 1 assist), and Manley adding goals for the 5-1 lead with 7:46 left in the first period.

The Camels battled back on a pair of goals by Bischoff and a woman-up goal by Joslin Hanbury to trail by one goal at the end of the first quarter at 5-4.

To open the second period, Coastal's defense forced the Camels into a pair of turnovers only to see Campbell even the match up at 5-5 on the woman-up goal by Rasa Welsh. Coastal answered the call on the only goal by Sophie Kingsborough 57 seconds later to lead 6-5 with 9:28 remaining until the halftime break.

However, the Chants' lead was short-lived as Ohlmann and Hanbury would sandwich a Downey goal to even the score at 7-7 and tied the score for the third time in the second quarter. That would be as close as the home team would get for the rest of the game, as CCU's Downey (1:51) and McClure (1:04) gave the Chanticleers a two-goal advantage at the break at 9-7.

Early in the third quarter, Coastal's Lily Wallace tallied her first career goal to increase the Chants' advantage to 10-7. The Chants quickly followed up with goals by Cardillo and Downey to take a 12-7 lead, only to see Campbell answer with goals by Ally Heath and Bischoff to cut the Chants' lead to 12-9.

The Chanticleers closed the third period with a 6-1 burst, including three-straight goals by Mascolo to record her third career hat trick as a Chant to lead 18-10.

In the final 15 minutes of action, Coastal's Downey started the running clock with back-to-back goals, including a woman-down goal to lead 20-10 with 11:33 remaining in regulation. Campbell stopped the running clock temporarily as Ohlmann recorded her final goal of the match with CCU leading 20-11.

The Chanticleers closed the fourth quarter with a 4-1 run, ignited by a free-position goal by Riley Glackin and capped off by the final goal of the game by McIlwaine for the 24-12 final.

Coastal will remain on the road next week to open ASUN conference play, as the Chanticleers will take on Kennesaw State in Kennesaw, Ga., on Friday, March 31, at noon ET.
