Coastal Softball Downs CofC in First Road Contest of the Season

Brabham pitched a complete shutout game

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team (18-3) downed the College of Charleston (5-13) in its first true road contest of the season.

It was a pitching duel to start the game with no runs scored and just three hits being made all by CCU hitters in the opening five innings.

With Raelee Brabham in the circle for the Chanticleers, Coastal notched three-consecutive shutdown innings in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, while striking out seven hitters and denying the Cougars of a single hit.

Payton Lamire started for CofC recording five strikeouts and allowing just three hits in the first five innings of play.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Chants' bats came alive when freshman Delaney Keith crushed her fifth home run of the season over the right-field wall to put CCU out in front 1-0.

Brabham's no-hit bid came to an end in the bottom of the sixth inning when Karlee Hughes slotted a single to left-center field, but the Chants' defense stranded her on base to keep the score at 1-0.

The Chanticleers extended their lead in the top of the seventh inning when a fielding error by the Cougars allowed Indya Smith to cross home plate to give the Chants a 2-0 lead.

The College of Charleston attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning when a walk and a single put the Cougars in scoring position for the first time in the game, however Brabham shut them down by striking out the final two hitters.

Brabham (8-1) pitched her second complete shutout game of the season striking out 11 Cougars, while giving up just two hits to pick-up the win.

The Coastal Carolina softball team will be back at St. John Stadium on Wednesday where the Chanticleers will face the Campbell Camels. First pitch is at 6 p.m. ET.
