ATLANTA, Ga. – The Coastal Carolina beach volleyball team closed out the Georgia State Day of Duals on Wednesday, March 8, falling to two nationally-ranked opponents in No. 10 Georgia State and No. 4 Florida State before defeating Mercer to conclude the day at 1-2 overall.
 
Match 1: No. 10 GEORGIA STATE 4, No. 20 COASTAL CAROLINA 1
In the Chants' opening match, the team of Emma Gonzalez and Lucy Campbell dropped the first point of the match as the duo fell 21-11, 21-15 to the Panthers' Destiny White and Aliisa Vuorinen on court No. 5.
 
Coastal Carolina's Madison Allred and Raychel Ehlers (22-20, 21-15) knotted the score at 1-1 on No. 4, while the tandem of Elena Sanchez and Ellie Hanford fell 21-14, 21-12 on court No. 2 to put the Chants down 2-1.
 
Georgia State clinched the match on court No. 1, as Sarah Riedell and Martine Kragholm was defeated by matching scores of 21-16, 21-16, while Sarlota Svobodova and Madie Lichty battled to three sets on court No. 3 but lost 17-21, 21-11, 15-7 for the final margin of 4-1.
 
Match 2: No. 4 FLORIDA STATE 5, No. 20 COASTAL CAROLINA 0
In a rematch from opening day, Coastal had the same result as the No. 4 Florida State Seminoles swept the Chants 5-0.
 
The Chants tested the Seminoles, however, FSU took the early 1-0 advantage on court No. 5, as CCU's team of Emma Kunaus and Celia Ryan suffered a 21-11, 21-16 loss. Coastal fell behind 2-0 with Allred and Ehlers battling for all three sets (21-15, 19-21, 17-15) but fell just short on court No. 4.
 
The Seminoles clinched the match on court No. 3, as Morgan Chacon and Jordan Polo defeated CCU's Sanchez and Riley Melton
21-13, 21-15. Despite the match being won, the Sandy Chants' Hanford and Lichty nearly scored a win over FSU's Anna Long and Raelyn White 19-21, 21-15, 16-14 on court No. 2.
 
The Chanticleers nearly avoided the sweep, as Kragholm and Riedell fell 21-19, 21-23, 15-9 to Maddie Anderson and Paige Kalkhoff on court No. 1.
 
Match 3: No. 20 COASTAL CAROLINA 3, MERCER 2
Coastal Carolina rebounded in the final match of the day as Allred and Ehlers put the Sandy Chants up 1-0 with a 21-15, 21-11 win on court No. 4, while on court No. 5 the tandem of Gonzales and Campbell gave Coastal a 2-0 advantage after defeating Reese Hood and Katie Corbett 21-17, 21-18 in straight sets.
 
The Bears' Nicole O'Mara and Kate Hardie put Mercer on the scoreboard with a 21-10, 21-19 win over Hanford and Lichty on court No. 2 and then evened the match up as Sydney Benson and Jordyn Thomas-Warren needed three sets to defeat CCU's team of Sanchez and Svobodova on court No. 3.
 
The Sandy Chants avoided the Bears' comeback bid, as Kragholm and Riedell earned the match win with the 14-21, 21-13, 17-15 win over Lexi Polychrones and Jordan Paddock on court No. 1.
 
The Sandy Chants return to the court on Saturday, March 11-12, at the CofC Classic for matchups against host College of Charleston, Berry College, Eastern Kentucky, and Catawba.
